It very well could just be luck. Heck, I ranked a site 2 years with no links! Beat authority sites! That was luck too I reckon.
A lot of posts say they don't have many links and have seen a positive effect.

I've read every post on this thread... and most of the people who got penalised were doing 'white hat stuff'.
From this thread... I'd say roughly 80% of demoted sites were 'white hat' with no links or just a few links.
Just my observation .

I don't know where you guys are reading the thread from...but make sure to read from December 9th onwards (not when this thread was started and google first started core update) because my site was doing fine until then when it got crushed to oblivion.
That being said I don't doubt that it's multiple factors, google even said it themselves. But the fact that spam sites can rank high suggests to me it's not all content. The fact that authority sites rank higher than topical relevancy suggests that age or trust or links may play a factor.
I'm sure on-page SEO plays a role too but I have been unable to identify any clear factors that results in boosts or being hit. On-page E-A-T seems to be helpful in some of the sites I've reviewed but it's also not black and white. Whenever I feel like I find a trend, I suddenly see a bunch of sites that go against the trend I've found.

After doing quite a fair bit of reading I've come to the following conclusion:
Google search is a load of bollocks.
They shuffle the deck every so often to level the playing field.
Don't over think it.
They fuck your site up and you scramble looking for answers.....
Or you could just skip all the bullshit and pay for ads?

It does seem like topical relevancy isn't nearly as important as before. Even anything on-page including content seems less important to the algorithm. If true, it's actually encouraging spam and the exact opposite of their guidelines on best practices.

Yes, my 2+ year site is just that kind; I just focus on one website, I work hard on writing articles but I have never built backlinks; although some visitors share my posts somewhere, the amount of links is much smaller than other sites' artificial backlinks. My site has been consecutively hit by Google's May and December core update. Now the traffic has decreased from 900+ visitors to 200+ visitors per day. The traffic is still decreasing...

Whatever the factors are we can be sure that good content (what they keep harping on) isn’t one of those factors... at least it seems that way. I’m about ready to sell my cheeks on the corner at this point. Google can lick my taint.

i want to add few things, they have different playing cards for different niches. so when they shuffle, you can use lessons learned from one niche to use on another niche. it is multi-indexing model
now a question for you: i get a sense that links now playing more of role than they did in 2019. I also notice that a powerful link, makes its positive impact in serp in less than 7-10 days. much faster than before. your thoughts on this?

Were you hit in May? How old is your site?
Like Homer said, I do believe there is some type of randomness to their marking of sites. This can't be taken as a blanket statement, but possibly sites that were new back in May and/or gained a boost (for whatever reason) were subsequently hit during this update. It might also account for why some newer sites (that had not been around back in May or not benefited from any boosting factors) got a boost in this core update. Also many sites that were hit in May got a boost in this update as well. Again, not a blanket statement because there have definitely been sites that have been hit by both. But maybe it's a way for them to give new sites "exposure"? and then possibly to see how sites will weather through the storm after they're hit?
Anyways...first questions first - were you hit in May? How Old is your site?

I feel sorry for you mate. I wrote tons of high quality articles (3000+ words) with great on page seo. Although I did buy links, I bought top quality niche edit links.
Doesn't matter...my keywords are still sliding in a downward trend.
If you can't beat em, join em.

Traffic for me has plateaued ever since the May update despite adding over 180 additional pieces of new content. It’s gone up maybe 100 daily views in the past 7 months but it’s been staying around 15-17k monthly views since then. All white hat. What’s the point of trying anymore.
