Google Broad Core Update December 2020

I'm trying not to do anything drastic with my site because it really is quality content...maybe it'll bounce back on its own....BUT what is your guys' stance on disavowing natural (but spammy) backlinks?
Disavowing or doing any other sh**t is a total waste of time. Keep providing the best content, forget all the crap Google preaches.

Would also like to get feedback on this. I’ve heard disavowing links isn’t necessary unless you’ve been penalized or negatively hit in some way, shape, or form but I’m not sure.

That's what Ive heard too. But just read this: https://www.mariehaynes.com/link-audits-and-disavow-advice-2019/ .... but who knows maybe they're just trying to sell their services

"Best Content", are you serious right now?! :p

You are correct. People try to use the tool like they are eating bread. And end up hurting their own sites.

Everybody has their own secret agenda. It's business. :D

nasty...

That's probably the only thing you can do especially now that Google only ranks authority regardless of relevance.

Moreover, I love what I write about, so irrespective of what Google thinks, posting useful contents is all I care about.

That's good to hear that you love what you do.:)

But coming to Google. Anyone can rank just by using the words 'Editor-in-chief' or of such sort.:p

Merry Christmas to all of the members here.

Update, again? What the.....

Looking through my ranking on search terms (which is still fluctuating a little weird at times) I am definitely seeing that i have held fairly steady on long tail keywords, but on more general keywords (like one or two-word terms) my rank dropped from sometimes first page so not on the first 10 pages..

On the general keywords it's mostly commercial now instead of informational. It seems Google is trying to steer people towards purchasing-related sites where before it gave more informational to help people learn more.

Or maybe it's more likely it takes more authority now to rank for those terms and I lost an edge or something along those lines.

I feel like it's probably the authority factor. I didn't rank high on high traffic general terms before the update ....but I guess playing devil's advocate - for those general terms..when people search it, do you think they're looking for general terms or looking to buy something?

Some of my important keywords have been ranked down due to keyword cannibalization.
If search results show two pages of your website at the same time, check the keyword cannibalization.

I solved it using the internal links.

My sisters site tanked the last update, she flat out quit and cried after working on it for 4 years. I told her to not give up but she didn’t care. She checked this last update and her site is Getting more traffic now then before the update that tanked her. Almost double. She regrets not continuing after that last update. Could of been doing much better.

That's interesting so:

New Site -> Google Sandbox

A Few Years Old Site -> Google Shit Test

is there anyone in here who was specifically hit by the update in May and then hit again or unaffected by the one in December? I keep hearing that it’s typical to see a “reversal” of traffic in the following update after being hit but I haven’t seen anything on my end.

Good question. I guess Google might have more insight on that as it likely varies unless it has the keyword buy in it for instance. The more I think about it, the more I come back to authority as a root cause and perhaps the way it calculated just shifted.

No, but this is the first update I was affected by.
