Social shares from the major platforms (Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Reddit, Stumbleupon, Delicious) should be part of your normal link-building activities. Unfortunately, it's impossible to say the exact impact that they will have on your rankings.
For pages I really want to rank, I will intermittently buy the social signal package from the SEO Armani BST in the marketplace, which includes shares to the aforementioned. No clue if it helps or not, but it helps me sleep at night and only costs $5.

I'm sorry to be the one to break this to you, but Google Plus One website votes and most social signals don't have a direct role in ranking your website.
I know this is bad news for most people but keep reading.
A lot of people think that if your website gets tons of social signals then automatically you will get a ranking boost.
This is not necessarily the case.
You can still get a ranking boost but due to circumstantial reasons.
Assuming that your social signals are completely natural and organic, this means that some people some way, somehow, somewhere find some value in your content.
If that is the case then some of them would link to you.
Do you see how all this works out?
It's those links that build your rankings up not necessarily the social signals that you get.
However, the social signals do provide a fairly objective indication of the value of your content.
If you see how all these are interrelated then you know how greater social signals can help you.
It's all about putting the right content at the right website in doing the right outreach.
Don't get all hung up on an automatic reading that just because you got a lot of retweets or Facebook mentions or Google Plus One votes that this automatically means a nice bump in the rankings on search engines because they don't work that way.
