I have a very important question to everyone who does SEO as a business for other businesses:
How do the constant Google updates effect your SEO Business?

The only reason I have never jumped into doing SEO as a service for others is because of the terrifying thought of having to constantly deal with Google screwing with client websites. Even if you stay far away from blackhat SEO, I have seen time and again a website still get ruined after each update. Please tell me how in the world you deal with this after each update? Do many clients expect money back if their website gets booted after an update? Please do not tell me that "good" seo avoids these issues because that simply is not true and ALL SEO is "bad" in the eyes of google and strictly against their terms so even doing white-hat SEO will get sites in trouble at some point, so I am just wondering how some SEO companies deal with this issue after every major Google update?

I am very appreciated of anyone's advice and sincerely interested in learning how I should deal with this. Thanks!

You act like there's only 5 clients in the world. If you get fired, go replace those clients. You can avoid problems by making sure they understand & agree that nothing in SEO is promised. It's why many do both PPC and SEO, plenty do Social Media ontop of it. Ranking on google is just one method of gaining customers, not the only one.

Nothing is constant in SEO business, business goes up and then it goes down with SEO updates but that how it works with Google now. They lay the rules.

    Ranking is one job
Staying on top is a totally different job

    And you never guarantee results,

Generaly speaking if you keep it clean results stay pretty consistent in local SEO

I have all of my clients sign a contract that goes over what I will and will not do as well as stating that procuring or maintaining a good rank is not guaranteed. Not only that, I also tell my clients through the contract that due to Google's volatile nature, there is a chance that their website could receive a penalty, albeit a small chance since I only do white hat SEO (I've worked on several websites and none of them have ever received a manual penalty).

There's a risk in every Internet marketing business.
    • SEO: Getting your client's website penalised
    • PPC: Getting your client's account banned
    • SMM: Getting your client's account banned
    • Social Media Shares/Likes/Follows: Getting your account banned or getting sued by the network.

Do not be afraid to move forward because of a "risk" and always use a contract for large Internet marketing projects.

This topic has been discussed to great lengths in the past week on this forum. A quick search and you'd have all that information at your disposal. Not much effort, wouldn't you say ?

when it comes to most businesses, not only in SEO, no guarantee guaranteed as I may say.
One thing that is guaranteed is that you have to constantly face the challenges to your business
at one way or another, so does with SEO.

I stopped providing seo services some time ago - as there is too many fake and cheap ones to compete against... The true costs of doing properly plus time and effort for me was not worth it... I prefer making money for myself and using my own skills to rank... Providing services to others is too much of a headache lol.. Good luck!!!

Never had a site penalised under my control, so haven't had to have that conversation.

If you think like your enemy, you're normally always at least 2 steps ahead of the crowd.

I'm not in the SEO business personally, but setting the correct expectations is super important in any client/consulting engagement. There are risks in any business- you just have to explain them to the client and let the client decide whether the potential benefits are worth it.

Besides, it's not easy to pinpoint who's responsible for a drop in rankings (could be a competitor or another contractor).

Would you be willing to send me a copy of your contract template? You can blank any identifiable info if you want... I can't send PM's yet so if you can just PM a link to a sample it would be MUCH appreciated!

You need to learn ways to handle your clients, regardless of the business type you may be in.

I bet that template would get viral in a moment if you share it on social networks. It's really tough to tell your clients your services are subject of arbitrary changes like these.

A good advice I would have thanked when I started SEO is "memorize Google webmaster guidelines". When I started working as an intern in a web company I had to release a couple of penalties for 2 sites and I know it would have been easier if I checked those guidelines and the backlink structure of the site.

    Hope it helps!

compare to other brick and mortar kind of business, seo is considered a much easy to deal with business, imagine this is the only business that you outsource 99.99999% of the jobs and also offer no guarantee for listing in page one.
