I was just reading someone's reply to a question on bhw about the best ways to rank a site. One of the answers stated putting a link in the footer of your website with your keyword as anchor text and point it to your homepage.

Does this help?

cheers, but i cant work out how it can be seen as diversifying my inbound link profile if the link is from my own websites footer. Or will it be counted as an inbound link on all other pages pointing to the homepage? Sorry to sound a bit drippy, but just wanted to clarify
 
I don't think it holds much water in terms of ranking.
