The most important thing after checking the link profile will be checking the history of the domain. You can look at http://web.archive.org/ to see how the domain was used in the past. If it was used as a PBN there is a chance it may have a penalty. You can check to see if it is still indexed in Google using site:url.com. just because it's not indexed doesn't mean its penalized but if it is indexed then it is good to go.
The majority of expired domains I come across have been spammed, abused and penalized. So just be careful picking a good expired domain.
