The Story: I am watching a competitors's website for several months. My niche is 200 000+ exact US searches. I am holdind 3rd position for a few months and it is quite profitable around $3000 a month (Adsense)

Four months ago a new EMD entered top 10 and slowly start to climb and entered top 5. #1 Was very old .net EMD. Almost impossible to outrank. Last 3 weeks this new EMD is ranking #1 and the old .net domains dropped to #2. The competition is strong. We have 5 Brands in top 10!

I decided to copy his technique in another niche which is:

1. A .co TLD
2. Fresh quality content
3. A few strong backlinks
4. Just one banner each page

My new niche:

250 000 exact searches in US
Strong competition

I registered my domain on: April 21, 2013. Just 4 1000 words long articles for now.

So you landed #14 with or without back links?
What did you learn from its back link analysis?

EDIT: just saw the 'few strong backlinks'
care to expand on how strong they are?
 
My website has jus 5-10 backlinks. Strong - relevant authoritative websites and social accounts :)

Define "Strong backlinks"?

Do you mean guest posts from relevant blogs or may be links form Private blog network?

You say "I registered my domain on: April 21, 2014". Maybe that was a typo. On topic - Would like to know the TYPE of links you built, that is if you want to divulge.
 
Yes I would also like to know more info on the links - like are they guest posts on private network, or real authority sites or what?

definitely staying subscribed to this though as it will be interesting case study. I have never tried to rank anything with that amount of searches but it sounds like a good tactic.

(With the smaller niches I target, there isn't really much profit until you hit #1 or #2).

Thanks for the note. it seems I wrote its expiration date :) Will share more info about my linkbuilding later on.

It is the same for most niches. Top 3 results get around 70-90% of the traffic.

Also out of interest, what program do you use to find those keywords?!
 
I'm interested to as how this is going to play out as well. I'm doing some similar experiments too.

Emd's are most likely to be useful for searchers,it makes sense to give them a boost,I never noticed any drop in their value anyway,I would say they have gained recently.Also take into account alot of these emd's are taken which could be another factor as well,some drop but if it's anything remotely worth anything they are snapped up before they get to the market anyway and no one is the wiser.
 
You said you research your Keywords using SEM Rush.

Can you elaborate on how?
