Hi All,

I have a question regarding product purchasing. I've been doing research and watching lots of video to understand how to go about creating a drop shipping store. I don't really like doing things blindly and much prefer to understand everything first before actually starting.

So my question is when setting up your Shopify Store and then adding products from Aliexpress using the extension (Oberlo) how does the payment for the products work?
In other words when the customer visits the site and purchases the product does the money then get placed in a "Limbo" where its then divided into going to Aliexpress to make the purchase and the rest sent to your own account.

Or is it that I purchase the product with my own money while the customers money is being processed which then I can transfer to my account once complete. The reason why I ask this is most of the videos I've watched on YouTube mentioned that once you setup your PayPal/Stripe this is the process that happens. Of course this will be all automated by Oberlo.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I can't answer your question precisely. I been wanting to do dropshipping for a long time and did a lot of research. But in the end, I decided to pursue other interests. Instead of selling physical products, I will sell digital products. Saving me the hassle of all the returns and dealing with suppliers.

Anyway, my tip to you is: Don't use Aliexpress, you will get shitty suppliers and shitty delivery. Find an agent with a proper track record that can help you out(also private labeling is a must I have heard nowadays).

In you case with oberlo, you can either set it automatic (they bill your payment method once a sale is made) or manual (you enter and order the product yourself)

In both cases you will need to pay for the product (either frol your money or from what u got from the customer).

I see so what I was told was correct. That's annoying :suspicious:

But thanks for the help.

I've been looking for other suppliers which can connect with Shopify but I couldn't find anything which was automatic. Most of them are manual do you have any in mind?

I guess it's time to help you out of your dream. You want to get rich quick? Go buy a lottery ticket and hope for the best.

Any business requires hard work, includes dropshipping. If you cant make time to export a .csv file and sent it to your agent, you should really take a look in the mirror.

There might be automatic things but that doesn't mean you should ignore manual uploads

I honestly don't want to get rich quick. I just find if there's something out there which can do things automatically why not use it. Pretty much everything in the future will be automated and manual input will be obsolete.
The whole point of me looking into drop shipping is to make extra cash on the side. I'm not talking about thousands but £100 a month will be fine for me. I have a full time job so this would just be something I do on the side for fun.

Alright, it looked like that to me. A lot of people watch some YTB videos and get the wrong idea about Dropshipping. There are plenty of automatic options available like CJDropshipping or Silkroad. Do your own research and decide what option is best.

Just make sure you don't Dropship directly from Alieexpress. A lot of products are duplicates and people(Chinese) underbidding each other. They will buy the product on Alibaba, place it on Alieexpress and then 'ship' it for you. Just normal people like you trying to earn an extra buck.

Either go to Alibaba yourself and find a supplier that way. Or what's probably the best. Find a trusted agent that will do that part for you and take care of shipping in a decent manner.

It goes to the bank account linked to your store. Then you have to go and source the products yourself. You profit the difference.

But isn't that what Oberlo is used for? To remove the manual part of going to Aliexpress and purchasing the item

If the money the customer pays for the item goes to the bank account linked to the store. Oberlo should then take the amount which is needed to purchase the product on Aliexpress correct?

No, you still have to press the order button yourself. Oberlo can't take out the money without your approval, it's just a 3rd party app.

Ohh I didn't know that I thought it would put the money in a pot or something within Shopify. So simply you add the products using Oberlo which are from Aliexpress. Then you add a slight profit by changing the prices of the product on your shopify store. Once a customer purchases the product the money is sent to your bank/paypal account which you then go onto Oberlo and then submit the order which the original price of the product is paid using your bank/paypal account.

I assume all the customer details are within the order which is sent to aliexpress.

Exactly, it fills all the required fields for you.

hmm I've been told different things from other people. Not regarding the required fields but the structure or method of adding products, purchasing and submitting the orders. Guess I'll do some more research and look at other threads and ask more questions before starting.

You would be saving yourself and everyone else a ton of time by opening a store and seeing how the things are yourself, otherwise it's a vicious cycle which gets you into the fear of starting something.

It's hella easy to say that "you're gonna do it tomorrow", but years pass by and you still haven't crossed the line because of the constant excuses on why something won't work.

Totally understand but I personally don't like doing something without understanding it. Even though people say you learn by mistakes I much prefer to understand what I'm doing so I do make as many mistakes.
But thanks everyone for the help.
