dot info domain for SEO

I want a domain name for my new forum. Dot com is already reserved by someone who has parked ads on it and I don't think he wants to sell it. Is it good idea to go for dot info domain name :confused: ?

If anyone had any good or bad experience with dot info domains please share....

PS: I am not sure whether domain extensions have role in ranking or not but recently one of my partner had very terrible experience with a free .co.cc domain, I want to make sure that same doesn't happen to me if i go for cheap dot info one.

. Info is crap for seo. Does the name still work if you a an s to the end like fakeforum(s)?
 
Also, co.cc domains are not shown in. Google.
 
dot com is available if i put the as prefix...let me explain I have two choices

the******city.com
or
*******city.info
 
PS: dot org is available without prefix

I would go with the prefix one. You still will get the seo juice out of it.
 
When you guys say prefix, are you talking about the one with the "the"? Just to clear things up, it is actually called an article (a, an, the) so I recommend the one with the article :)
 
Don't even worry about the SEO, worry about click throughs and conversions.

Would you really click on a .info site? I don't know if I would. If you're good enough at SEO, there's no reason to need a .info. Rank a .com and forget the domain name being EMD or not.
 
I've never had a .info site rank well. Try the .com with a prefix/article/whatchamacallit!

You don't know what you are talking about. I rank fine with my .info domains. They are harder to rank in certain niches I suppose, but they are just as good as the .com, org or .net

I personally had 2 .info domains and I didn't notice any difference in ranking compared to .com, .org or .net domains, however, they where in sub-niches. So I can't tell you if it differs a lot in bigger niches. In small niches it doesn't matter.
 
Just to make things clear: for some short period of time, the .cc domains had been deindexed by Google. Nowadays, however, they appear in Google with no problems.
 
In my experience it depends on the competition. For example, for Spanish KW's that have very soft SERP's competition, I've been able to rank easily .info's.
 
I agree with Williamk, for forums branded names are the best, sort of names that people can remember really easily. In my country the biggest forums have very branded domain names and those names really have no search volume what so ever, well except of course after those forums got really big and people just search for that specific forum.
