It hurts to hear...no wonder why local storage is a dying business and cloud storage is thriving. If the offline mode to work on all application is solved cloud storage will be 100%

Even google sync is not bad. Also there is crashplan and backblaze.
If you mostly work at home you can buy raspberry PI (or some low power PC), connect with hdd and sync data to this hdd via home wifi - quick and easy if you cannot get standard PC and setup raid array.

If you know linux for around $10/month you can get kimsufi server with 2 hdds. I use such server for database backups and other stuff.
If you want to stay really safe raid + backups to 2 locations.

PC's are only good to run dummy bots

PC and Mac when it comes to hardware is same/very similar thing so no difference really here.

P.S.
If this disk is valuable to you look for data recovery company. It's possible that big part of data on hdd (or even all) is still alive.

I dont know if anybody has suggested it yet but RAID is a good idea too
 
i don't use my harddrive anymore to store important files. i just use it now for the games, installs, etc. Everything is under my onedrive account and it has been very very useful!
 
Sorry to read this. There are some (fairly expensive) options for data recovery from dead devices. Some require cleanrooms, others not.
 
Lost TWO multi-terabyte hard drives in a house fire. I had decades of family photos, hundreds of movies, etc. Those were my backups to my laptops. Nothing I could do about it.

Are 5 10TB externals too much for my stuff? It's getting close....

Maybe I should move to the cloud...but don't trust it there either.

That's a good storage size but would definitely recommend a on-the-cloud backup (to protect yourself from a drive failure).
