Don't make the mistake I made

There I was, half-way through writing an article I've been working on for 5 hours. I take a five-minute break, make some coffee, return to my laptop, and BAM... I return to my computer to read a "hardrive not detected" error.

Quickly, I researched the Dell forum and saw others with similar issues.

Based on the successful attempts others had with unscrewing the rear of the laptop and disconnecting/reconnecting the HD, I did exactly that.

Unfortunately, it didn't work. I disconnected and reconnected the HD two times; no luck.

Now, let's talk about what was lost:
  • Over 100,000 words I've authored that were used as samples.
  • A list of over 100 business/service ideas
  • Hundreds (if not thousands) of photos
  • 50Gb worth of movies
  • Logins to WP sites and projects
  • Random entertainment/media collection items
  • $5,000+ worth of collected software
There's more but I'm not going to make this a full-page thread.

Needless to say, I showed my laptop some love after coming to terms with the fact that the HD died (I'm 99.5% sure).

Please, back up your s***, save it, put it on the cloud, keep it on a separate external drive. Protect your assets!

This one hurt, but I know to protect myself moving forward. :(

Yup, well aware (especially now). This particular laptop was used mostly for typing and some other monotonous tasks so an HD performed well.

However, with an HD having moving/mechanical parts, it is the furthest-from-safest option for media and file storage.

And with an SSD, making an image out of it is pretty easy and fast too (so you can restore it at a later date).
 
Sorry mate that sucks . It can also happen with SSDs, the only solution is to do backups.
I made a simple batch script that automatically launches 3 times a day to backup my important files in a separate drive.
OP maybe you can recover some of your lost files, there are tools to do this. There also companies that can recover your files with some special devices, look online for one near your place. Good luck

Yes, after all, Microsoft Office doesn't require a whole hell of a lot to run swiftly. We're not talking about 3D-rendering with AutoCAD here. HAHA
 
I will keep backups of my work in an external hard drive and software copies in Pendrives. Never trust your pc or laptop.
 
Happened to me in 2017, when I lost my SSD. I forget it in a public place and when I returned there to ask the manager if he saw it, he denied. Months after that some of his friends called me by my 2nd name. The proof that the manager was the one who stole it, but what can I do to prove that ? So I let it go.
It sucks, but you'll get over it.

Sorry to hear that bud, kind of afraid of the same shit happening here...it would be a disaster...can anyone recommend a good cloud backup service? About 5TB/mth.
 
oh s**t. This hurts and thanks for posting this cuz i need to backup all my important files of laptops right now.
 
Sorry to hear that but its crazy you don't have multiple backup solutions in place.

@ContentExpert You can still recover your data, it might be tricky depending on how fucked the hdd really is, maybe just the out connector casing is damaged but thats normally on externals either way you will want to go to a data backup specialist who can do some digital forensic shit on that hdd, look into it to get your data back, some standard computer repair shop might be able to help you out if it isn't too badly damaged, but the data is still there either way.

If its really bad its gonna involve connecting that hdd via wires to some data recovery set up and salvaging what u can, its easier than it sounds but u might need the extra hardware to do it.
