I have been there roughly 4 years ago. Since then, I am backing up all photos and light sized docs in Drive and all the rest of stuff on USB. I don't back up the stuff which can be downloaded again like movies.
You might succeed to save the damaged drive by looking for another identical HDD and replace the board.

I always save to a local dropbox or nextcloud folder. Instant back up.

Sorry to hear that OP. If you are using windows there are tools that will sync your critical folders to online backup service.
Also using PC instead of laptop you can set up raid 10 array - its not bulletproof solution, but way better than 1 disk. Raid + backup is the solution for critical tasks. Backup alone or raid alone is not something you can be really sure.

Holy moly, definitely take that into a data recovery specialist - if you have the bank for it that’s, years and years ago when I had one of our servers go it was quite a big boi invoice and not too much was able to be recovered.

be sure the files are encrypted before you upload them. you never know who can read them.

Put your files in an encrypted container before uploading them on a third party server (look for Veracrypt, standard tool in the industry).
You can continue buying Dell laptops but the pro versions, they are way better built than the public version. Latitude models are great .
