People who gonna say yes:
I found my competitors having about 500 words with no backlinks and authority but still ranking at top 5

Value is better then length always.

If people share your content, etc. It'll beat a poor big article for sure...

But it will depend on the nich, competition, etc

For long term yes,
Since ranking for just an X keyword wont be beneficial in long term instead you should try to go for everything around X.
and the competitors might be using PBNs.

try to make best content for that keyword.
and SERP have like 200 factors, fixing 1 of them won't help you that much.

tHIS IS 100% RIGHT BUT

====>THE BEST RULE IS TIME ON PAGE. NOTE THISS KEY

With the recent Google Algo update, Google is preferring the content most, so I think yes, the content quality matters

It depends on the niche or category that the keyword that you are targeting. But based on a general survey made, the survey discovered that majority of the top ranking pages for a moderate competitive keyword would have content in the length of 2000 to 3000 words respectively.
Although this may vary depending on the keyword competition and niche, but having an article with 2000 to 3000 words and can provide value to the reader (low bounce rate), will rank fairly well in the process.

What matter is when your page answer what searcher intent. If searcher get what they search for, that's what google want.

I didn't read the above replies, But the answer is yes, and I have tested this myself.

Absolutely the content matters.!! Try adding quality contents only no more lengthy paragraphs.

Google ranks for better content than longer content, so how you'd convey the information in article matters a lot. And ranking depends not only on content so analyze your on-page, mobile optimization etc.,

I would say yes, I always like to see what my competition has and then beat them in length and content value to get a better onpage footing

I usually look at the top 3 pages and paraphrase all the content. That way my page covers everything

That would depends on the niche. Sometimes you will find high competitive niche with less content rank higher because of the links.

Yes, The amount of article word count is an important role in SEO. But Google will not surely rank pages based on word count alone. Short content may rank just as well as longer content. What’s most important is how strong the content satisfies a particular inquiry.
