Hi everyone,

I have been using Shorts to grow a YouTube channel and noticed they bring views quickly, but I am not sure about long-term impact.

Sometimes Shorts views do not convert into subscribers or long-form viewers.

So I wanted to ask:
  • Are Shorts still effective for channel growth?
  • Do they actually help long videos perform better?
  • Or should beginners focus more on long-form content?
I would love to hear your experiences.

Shorts are a double-edged sword in 2026. Yeah, you get the views, but you're building a 'junk' audience. Most Shorts viewers have the attention span of a goldfish—they’ll never sit through a 10-minute video.
If you want a real brand and loyal subs, focus on long-form. Use Shorts only as 'ads' for your main videos using the related link feature. If you go all-in on Shorts, you’ll end up with a dead channel that has 50k subs but 100 views on long videos.
My advice: Focus 80% on long-form. Shorts are just a side hustle to grab some extra reach.

Shorts can still help with exposure, but they do not always convert into long term viewers. I have noticed they work best when the shorts are related to your long form content. On Youtube, a mix of shorts for reach and long videos for retention seems like a safer approach.

best approach now is both, Shorts to get discovered, long-form to build loyal subs and real watch time, channels that combine them usually grow faster. if you're a beginner, use Shorts to pull people in but make sure they lead somewhere, otherwise you'll just get views with no real growth, are your Shorts related to your long videos or random?

Yeah, Shorts still work, but they’re kind of a different game. They’re great for getting fast reach and testing ideas, but the audience they bring doesn’t always care about long videos. So yeah, a lot of views don’t convert. From what I’ve seen, Shorts help most when they’re connected to your main content like teasing or clipping long videos. If you treat them as separate content, growth can feel “empty.”

For beginners, I’d say don’t rely only on Shorts. Use them for traffic, but focus on long-form if you actually want a loyal audience and стабильний ріст.

Shorts are great for quick exposure and gaining subscribers, but the bridge to long-form content is still weak. Most Shorts viewers won't naturally jump to your longer videos unless the niche is perfectly aligned. It is better to use them as a secondary tool while focusing your main energy on long-form authority. ;)

Shorts are awesome for quick visibility and views, but they often attract a different audience that doesn't always stick around for your long-form content, so for long-term growth and dedicated viewers, it's usually smarter for beginners to nail their long-form strategy first

talking from personal experience, if you can link your short videos to your longer form videos that is the best strat to get benefit from short videos.

Shorts are still great for reach and fast exposure, but they’re weak for converting into loyal viewers. The audience behavior is different - a lot of Shorts viewers don’t transition to long-form.

They can help indirectly (more impressions, occasional subs), but they don’t reliably boost long videos unless the content and niche are tightly aligned. Best approach: use Shorts for discovery, but build your channel around long-form if you want stable growth and monetization. Shorts bring traffic, long videos build the audience.

Longer-form videos are the foundation for building loyalty and lasting value. The optimal approach today is a hybrid strategy: using short videos as a practical funnel, highlighting compelling ideas to pique curiosity, and then steering viewers toward longer content. Instead of random creation, ensure every short video maintains thematic consistency and serves as a quality "sales pitch"; otherwise, you'll only have inflated numbers without genuine growth in depth.

Shorts are good for quick views & getting some attention, but they don’t always turn into loyal subs or long video watchers. They help with exposure, but long-form is what really builds a strong channel. Best to use both together instead of relying on just one.

The main issue is that Shorts and long-form audiences often don't overlap, as the consumption habits are completely different. While Shorts are great for rapid brand awareness, they rarely convert into loyal long-form viewers unless your niche is highly personality-driven or educational

This is what I do;

Create a short that loops content wise (starts with the answer, ends with a question)
Mention the subscribe button in it
Boost it (if you can) with the "Audience Growth" feature in YouTube Promotions.

And like that with $25 spend on a short like that I get around 50 new subscribers.
