Hi everyone,

When starting a new website, do you still focus on low competition keywords first, or do you go after bigger keywords from the beginning?

I have seen different opinions on this, and I'm curious what has worked best for you in recent Google updates.

I would like to learn about your approach.

Yes , Focus on low comp keywords first that should be your first targets. Focus on hundreds and hundreds of them .

Do you think starting with low competition keywords still gives faster traction or has google made it harder?

Yes, I start with low competition keywords because they are easier to rank and also helps to bring traffic and authority. When the site grows then I started to target more competitive keywords.

My approach is to mix both but with a heavy focus on low competition keywords in the beginning once the site gains authority it becomes much easier to compete for bigger terms

yeah, i’d still start with low competition, but only if the keywords connect to a bigger topic cluster. random easy posts can get clicks, but they usually don’t build much authority by themselves.

Yes I still start with low competition keywords first It helps build initial rankings traffic and topical authority and then

I gradually move toward more competitive keywords once the site gains strength and trust in Google

For a fresh site low competition keywords are usually the safer bet once a few pages start ranking it's much easier to go after bigger keywords

Yes targeting low competition keywords first still works well because they help new websites gain authority traffic and faster rankings naturally

Low competition keywords are still my priority in the beginning once those pages start ranking it's much easier to expand into more competitive topics

It hlps the site get some initial traffic and helps build authority quicker. Then once Google trusts the domain it’s easier to rank for bigger keywords later.

Generally, it’s very difficult to target highly competitive keywords right from the start, unless you already have a website with strong authority or backlinks.

Yes! Especially when a client wants to see some progress, you should give priority to low hanging fruits. Once they are happy, that will eventually give adequate time to target medium and high competition keywords.

I still start with low competition keywords they usually rank faster and help build some authority before i go after the more competitive terms

Google has definitely made it harder lately. A lot of those "low competition" keywords you find in tools are just dominated by Reddit, Quora, or massive authority sites now anyway. If you just target low KD words without some basic link building or a really tight topical map, half your pages won't even get indexed. @rohit755755 made a good point about clusters... you can't just post random easy keywords anymore. You need to find actual gaps where the search intent isn't satisfied, not just trust what a tool says is easy. Otherwise you are just wasting time writing content that sits in crawled - currently not indexed.

I still prefer targeting low competition relevant keywords first They usually help build topical authority and bring early traffic before moving on to more competitive terms.

i usually mix both but around 80% of my content targets low competition keywords at the start it keeps the site growing while the bigger pages take their time

I still prefer starting with low competition keywords especially for new websites they help bring early traffic and build the sites authority over time once the website gains more trust i move towards bigger keywords i believe a balanced approach works better than chasing only high volume keywords

still low competition first every time, builds the trust/authority you need before bigger keywords even become winnable

Yeah, first start with low competition keywords, because they have to rank your site and also help to grow traffic for your website. For a new website, the most effective approach is to focus on low-competition, long-tail keywords first.

targeting low competition keywords first is the best strategy. as soon as those start ranking, you can continuously start targeting keywords with slightly more traffic. it builds solid momentum and works really well.
