Difficulty of outranking Wikipedia for keyword?

Hey guys,

I am doing some keyword research at the moment, and a few of the keywords that I am looking at have Wikipedia as the first two results.

Local search comes into play as well, and the 6 subsequent spots in Google are populated with local business maps listings.

Traffic Travis lists the keyword as "Relatively Easy"

Would it be possible to outrank Wikipedia and the local businesses with an EMD and good content? If so, how difficult do you suppose it would be?

Wikipedia is hard to outrank. Its not impossible, but not likely.

You can outrank google places listings, but again not super easy.
 
anyone else have any info on this subject?
 
Wikipedia is easy to outrank.

You just need to have good onpage seo (SEO Pressor plugin) and good High PR Links from networks like FBL, BAN, and ALN.

is seo pressor plugin better than yoast?
 
IT depends if the word you want to outrank is commonly used or not. If it is, many people will link in their articles to Wikipedia (the exact page you compete with), just to make their link building look more natural or their site more authority.

If it is a case, and the article is typical WIkipedia quality (2K plus words), it is nearly impossible to outrank it.

This.
Imo, you have two types of wiki listings.
1. Not many backlinks, but ranks high because it's wiki. Still hard to beat, but can be done.
2. As above, a common word, or common reference, that people link to wiki. These are very hard to beat... some crappy ALN links and a on page plugin aren't going to do it lol. Go to www.opensiteexplorer.org and enter the wiki address. It'll give you an idea of how hard it is. Ones with page authority of 80+ are very hard to beat.
 
Wikipedia is difficult to beat. However, since they don't sell anything, your ctr at #2 will be higher than what it is in other niches where a seller might be the first result.
 
I've outranked wikipedia a few times. Not easy, but definitely possible. Think outside of the box. :D
