It just does. Mix your articles up with images and video, looks more natural and the content is better.

Try this on Google 'add video to blog post'. See what it comes up with. Or find a video on Youtube and use the share button to find the embedded link. load this in your article and the youtube video will load.

I think you'll find that was about the bio page on the web 2.0 site you sign up to.

For traffic - if you make a load of Tumblr posts and then promote them with another tier - sure - that's all good. Especially if you link to internal URL's on your site. Great. might even sqyeeze some link juice.

But for general success, you need links from different IP's no point getting hte same link over and over again.

That means you probably want to be as diverse as possible. But if one high quality platform is really easy to bot, it might be worth a tiny bit of extra time and effort to get another "half valued" link.

I don't know if that is right or not, but that is how I've always approached it.
