Hi guys,
I originally had a Proton Mail email address linked to my Instagram account. I later removed it and linked my Outlook email instead.

Today, I wanted to enable two-factor authentication (2FA), but I ran into a problem. At this step, Instagram is sending the verification code to my old Proton Mail address, even though it is no longer linked to my account.

Unfortunately, I no longer have access to that Proton Mail account because Proton permanently deactivated it after a year of inactivity.

I'm really worried that I won't be able to resolve this issue, and this Instagram account is very important to me.

Could you please tell me how I can fix this problem? I would really appreciate your help.

Are you Meta Verified? If yes, I'd try contacting Meta Support. They might be able to help.

Had this exact thing happen before. The code going to proton isnt about whats "linked" now, its that instagram still has that old address sitting in your account under the login/security side even though you swapped the display email. Two things to try...

First go into Accounts Center > Password and security > and check if the old proton is still listed there as a contact point, sometimes removing the email from the profile doesnt kill it in accounts center. If its there you can remove it directly.

If it wont let you, then honestly your best route is the account recovery flow. Go to the login page, hit "need more help", and request support that way from a device/IP youve always used to log in. Meta looks at trusted device history so doing it from your usual phone helps a lot.

@curdoc is right that Meta Verified speeds this up massively if you have it, the support chat actually responds. Without it its slower but not impossible, just be patient and keep resubmitting.

This is what they do to keep the account Secure, they will always send Mail to the previous Email.

Here are a few options you can try :

-Why not add a Phone Number and setup 2fa with that?
-Wait for 7-14 days and try setting up the 2fa with Email and see where the code is going.
-Try contacting Meta Support (Buy Meta Verified first).

My phone number is linked to my account, but Instagram still asks me for a verification code sent to my deactivated email address.

In Password and Security, my contact email is the new one that I recently added. However, when I tap "Recent Emails," it just shows an error and doesn't display anything.

If you haven't received the code via email or phone number at all, open the Instagram app > on the login screen, tap Forgot password? (or Get help logging in). Enter your username, select Try another way, and tap I no longer have access to these phone numbers or email to submit the identity verification form to the support team.

Snce you have acess to the account, there is no need worry about losing it. Use the support form under "get help signing in" and state that you no longer have acess to the old email address. In the meantime, you can try setting up 2fa usign an sms code or an authenticator app, which is more secure.

Funny enough, I subscribed to Meta's highest-tier plan because the first month was free. Now it lets me access all the settings without asking for a verification code sent to my old email. I wonder if my account has gained more trust because of the subscription, or if this is simply a privilege that comes with the subscription.

sounds like a caching bug on their end, sometimes happens after email swaps. try removing outlook and re-adding it, forces ig to resync the linked email

To resolve this issue, visit the Meta Account Recovery Hub support page or the Instagram app on your familiar mobile device. On the login screen, tap "Forgot password" and choose to verify your identity via your linked Facebook account or use the "Record selfie video" feature to allow Meta to verify that you are the actual owner of the account.

On top of that, I archived all my posts. Even though my profile shows 0 posts, Instagram still says I have 11 posts, and it's been like that for a month. :anyway:

Contact to instagram support. If you are a meta verified then you can easily chat with support them. They can give you the solution

Sounds more like a meta Verif privilege than extra “trust.” - since you have access now, enable an authenticator app, save the backup codes and update every recovery option before the old email causes troube again. Idk

it usually lets you switch the verification destination. if it still insists on the old proton address, you’ll need to contact instagram support from the account, explain you lost access to the old email, and ask them to update the email/2fa method so they can resend codes to your current outlook email.
