Actually what is canonical tag?and how it works ? is it important ?
 
its to avoid duplicated content and its very important.
 
The above is correct, the canonical tag is used to specify where the original article is posted. There's other techniques that you can use the canonical tag for but
incorrectly utilizing it can get you in trouble too so be careful.
 
It can be replaced with next/prev where it makes the most difference.
As for marking up external articles that you copied with rel=canonical – it doesn't make a difference, your page with a stolen aticle won't rank either way.
 
Ya definitely not talking about stolen articles here but there's situations where I've seen site
owners put the same content on two sites they own and just canonical the dup to the site
they want ranked. I have a client that got himself a penalty for dup content and a simple
rel canonical fixed it overnight and he's back on page 1.
 
Canonical is a 301 redirect analogue which you have to use when 301 redirect is not suitable for you (you need to leave duplicate page accessible for users).
