This is how Google works. The x-axis is the content, the y-axis are the backlinks, the colors are the niches identified by Google.
The black circles is where you want to be for every niche, i.e. most relevant content & most relevant backlinks.
The technique is known as clustering. In reality there is a huge amount of clusters (niches) and lots of axes. However, the content and the backlinks are the major ones.
No imagine, your content is very relevant and covers the niche well. However, your backlinks are totally irrelevant. The black circle will move upwards. Once its outside the color area you will disappear from the SERP.
