Done SEO on our websites and had great success. But didn?t have enough time, google changed algorithm and websites dropped. So I hired a SEO company then another. All want $$$ and then promised serp will improve in months, waited but nothing happened. No success, now I don?t understand why we have dropped like a rock on some KW and don?t exist for others. Links don?t look bad. Nothing from google webmaster indicating problems. PR dropped and we keep slipping.

However, competitor website only has 118 backlinks and remains steady over the years and they are top in Google Serp always. Anchor text and links shouldn?t put them there? So what are they doing?

Does anyone have answers or can give answers and recommend a good SEO.

You need to analyze your backlinks. Remove the bad ones.
Diversify the anchor text, add social media, update content etc etc... in short, start working on it smarter than before
You need to have your own strategy & then get the work done by yourself or by hiring someone.

Thanks, but done that. Still not working. Is there any tool or test that can mimic google to correct websites. Or some good SEO out there?

My competitor #1 in serp. What is their SEO doing, min links (118), poor anchor text, poor links, no social media. But #1 for years. Does anyone know how they are fooling google.

What makes you think they are 'fooling' Google. Sounds to me like you're the one looking to fool Google.

Sounds likely that their site is natural and yours is manipulative and has been detected as such.

PM me the URL of the competitor and your site. That can give a hint on why their site is ranking better than yours.

The best trick to rank nowadays is just do what your competitors are doing. So if they are buying links on high DA/PR sites then you have to do just that and mimic their strategy. You can't expect to rank with web 2.0s or bookmarks when they are spending big on high quality links.

It might have smth to do with the site age and content, and what they did before all the "animals" algorithms. I know a site which is on first page for their kws since 2009, without adding a single link since then, at at that time only added links from directories and manual comment spam. They never updated the site content or design, never added any kind of social signals or anything else. It just hangs there and fluctuate 5-8.

Thanks for the comments. Not trying to fool google. But trying to understand? It seems everyone has the answers but no one knows what is really going on with google. Did the competitor analysis, compare, check backlinks and so on and so on. Learned more than I wanted to. I don't want to be an expert on this. But can't find one.
I was hoping someone out there really understands the game google plays with website serp. Tired of listen to SEOs that want $$ now and say wait for 3, 6 or 9 months and it will come but keep paying $$.

Sounds like your site is over optimized. If you have a decent SEOed page for a particular keyword and it doesn't even show up in the top 1000, it means you're overoptimized.

    Read this.

Do the tests it suggests in section 2 to determine if you're overoptimized. If so, you can come back for your keywords simply by correcting your keyword stuffing issues, and its a quick comeback -- once you do it your site starts popping back on the corrected pages within approximately 48 hours.

Thanks for all the feedback. But one of my competitors has a total of 7 websites with almost the same content on each site, even the web structure is the same. Copyscape even finds them. Yes a total of 7 sites that you can find easy doing a search on google and the competitor even list the duplicate sites on some of their sites.
I have seen this for more than a few years now and they still rank #1. I tried to understand this and even asked google. But no reply. Its google why should they. So for all the comments out there no one has the answers.

So I am still looking for a knowledgeable SEO who really understands how things work.
BTW I tried to contacting the competitors SEO who structured the duplicate websites but he is not taking anymore clients now or talking. So does any SEO understand this?

It's hard to suggest any kind of advice without knowing the details of your site and your competitors like domain age, who's linking to them etc...

Regardless, there are few things that I would suggest without even looking at the site.

    1. Page load speed - speed it up. This is more important than most people realize. Change servers, compress images etc...
    2. For link building, have a look at co-citations instead of anchor text. Google is a lot smarter than you think.
    3. FRESH Content that compels readers to share or re-visit etc. You can compete on backlinks all day but if your content sucks. it's a lost cause* in the long run. Also, if you're not adding fresh content, Google spiders no like.
    4. Make sure your site structure is correct so you're not losing link juice and that the link juice is channeled properly.
    5. Make sure you are linking out to other authority sites. Yes, do-follow links.

How do you know that their backlink profile is weak? if all their links are coming from relevant sites and those sites have links from relevant sites even though the PR is low, this is much stronger than 3 times the amount of links with double the PR coming from irrelevant sites. Have you looked at the backlinks of the backlinks of their backlinks going back at least 2 tiers? You might find your answers there - they are getting a lot more link juice than you might think.

I think overall you are focused on the the wrong things.

Keep adding quality content to your site. Make it your mission to get backlinks naturally with great content first before you do more link building. Ask yourself, would someone want to not only read this content but also SHARE this content? Apart from reducing your bounce rate, by making it sharable, you will send multiple signals to Google that your site is more relevant to people's search queries. Signals like people going to your site from different browsers from around the world etc. I'm not interested in Google propaganda/lies so these suggestions are geared for results.

    Hope you find your answers.

Well, it looks like the well is dry on knowledgeable SEO understanding google. But I hope not. Got good feedback but nothing explaining what really really really makes a difference on serp. So did a lot more digging and found competitors are using two or more sites that split the web site and have a network of sites instead of a single one with a lot of duplication and a lot of cross linking. Google gives all sites good PR. All no nos according to google but they are on top in serp. And these sites have limited links, poor links and link directories and some good links. The site structure is ok, but meta tags and titles average to below average. And content and kw density is all over the place.

So why are they on top for serp. Is are there any great SEOs who can understand the google Algorithm. But please don't tell me one little thing will make a big difference since the top sites vary some much.
