I like to keep them all the same too.

Best to think of a really unique name and use it across all networks.

oh noez, spammers used to put it this way: a name of a famous celebrity and any letter between the first and last name :)

on a more serious note:
you need to think of removing the profile picture you're using at the moment, because:
"Misuse of Twitter Badges: You may not use a Verified Account badge or Promoted Products badge unless it is provided by Twitter. Accounts using these badges as part of profile pictures, background images, or in a way that falsely implies affiliation with Twitter will be suspended."

I was using that image temporarily until I found one to use.

I use hyphens or underscores, if the site I'm joining accepts them, so peter-bruce, and peter_bruce would be options. I haven't particularly had problems getting people to follow such names, but I don't print my Twitter IDs on business cards or anything. I think when people click a link to follow, they don't care what the user name is or how easy it is to remember.
 
I just added a 1 to my name. Ugly, but the only option I had :/
 
I had a similar dilemma, when I first signed up on Twitter.

Someone was using my nickname (which is not common at all, since it's a play on my given name, which in itself, is not very common, either) and not only did the dude only Tweet ONCE (the day he signed up), but he had been inactive for over a year and wasn't even replying to direct messages. Annoying.

So, what I did was, put "THE" in-front of my nickname - made it sound/look even better. However, since yours is intended to reflect professionalism, I would have used officialpeterbruce.
 
The most annoying thing is when people create an account with the username you want then never use it!

Yes you are right here. Those persons have a account creating craze and then leave it forever.
