Hey everyone, I hope I posted in the correct forum.

So I have noticed my traffic is declining and I am loosing rankings. Just a little info about my site, I started it in 2006, its about sneakers.

I noticed some sites that look like spam sites are linking to certain pages of my website using anchor text like "Online Slot Machines". Not sure why they are doing it. I am not sure if this is even the root of my problem but amongst speeding up the website and finally being able to use the Yoast SEO plugin (was on an older version of thesis) but traffic nor rankings have gone up, in fact certain keywords I was ranking for have dropped.

So I guess I am asking is, if someone links to your site from a website with a bunch of links, using anchor text that has nothing to do with my website or the specific article, can it hurt rankings?

All help is greatly appreciate. Thanks for taking the time out to read.

Backlink have nothing to rank as long as they are from genuine sites but say that the site is spam site or network site created just for gaming search engine then they may cause trouble when google fiind those blogs are created for the sole purpose of backlink. If you find certain backlink spam just add the link in disavow. so you may not get in to the trouble. Also just share your links in social site in regular interval so it give some boost to your ranking.

The only time your anchors would be questionable is when you have thousands of links with the exact same anchor on spammy sites.

To answer your main concern: yes it's bad when a spam site links to your site (obviously you haven't asked for this, so it sucks).

Could I ask how these sites are linking to you? Is it via comments, have they embedded links deep within your site? Or something similar?

Let me know and we'll see if I can't shed a bit more light on your troubles.

:)

Don't listen to the fools. Make a list of the unrelated links (online slot machines) from WMT/Ahrefs/whatever tool you have, and disavow them.

When linking to other websites keep it natural, Getting more links from unrelated niche looks unnatural to the Google and that leads to penalize your site. You should contact the webmaster first to remove those links, If not then submit request to Google webmaster.

The only choice you really have is to disavow them. Unfortunately this is the environment that Google's has created, so part of SEO is monitoring your backlink profile for any neg SEO activity.

It is too bad when a spam sites links with your site.so,make a list of unwanted sites and disavow them or contact the webmaster to remove those sites.
