I would like to know how an e-commerce website would SEO their individual product pages if the product names were in fact not keyword relevant and did not contain any search-worthy keyword. What would the best approach be if their product name was not a keyword or was not being searched by name but only by other means/keywords/phrases.

I will take a crack at it! :)

The "JL137 Micro-cog" is a common but fictitious repair part for Auto-Still (an internet enabled alcohol still). No one knows about it or what it is for.

You need to create content (on a blog for example):
    • "auto-still orange indicator light"
    • "how to fix an auto-still"
    • "auto-still troubleshooting"
    • "that little purple pointy gear in my auto-still"
    • "auto-still orange light"
    • ...
And then create List content (on a blog for example):
    • "10 Important Tips if you own an Auto-Still"
    • "25 Ways to save or make money with your Auto-Still"
    • "15 Secrets only the experts know about their Auto-Still"
And the create awareness articles too:
    • "This $3 part saves Auto-Still owners $150."
    • "Repair the Auto-Still in ten minutes for only $3"
    • "The Orange Indicator on your Auto-Still is no big deal."
THEN ... the important part... All of these external content pages link to your product page as the goto place to get the "JL137 Micro-cog" that no one would ever keyword search for.

In many cases a product page can't target all the areas it needs to. Often pages rank best for 1 search term and poorly for a lot of collateral search terms. In your case you are suggesting that the product page doesn't rank best for anything for whatever reasons (which usually happens because of fierce competition, no market, or poor SEO). In those cases target the problems the product solves and use the product page as the answer. Spread the search term targeting over many relevant pages.

and to directly answer your question:

    Title: JL137 Micro-cog - Auto-Still Replacement Part
Meta Description: When the orange light appears on your auto-still you need to replace the JL137 Micro-cog to fix the issue.
    • Product schema markup the product details
    • Rating and Review Schema if applicable
    • Twitter card on Open graph tags
    • High Quality Photos of the Part
    • PDF guide on replacing the part
    • All the product details about which models the part is compatible with.
    • And then related links to the best of the offsite content you made.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1

All links are in pyramids. If the content is real, relevant, and helpful it is all white hat and legal especially considering the target page doesn't rank for anything anybody is searching for.

I think that the best strategy for this kind of websites should is to use the big authority method. Google is giving a lot more attention to big authorities these days compared to smaller websites. Brand awareness is one of the components here and you can read more on BHW about this strategy, if you use the search function

    Another example:

A fictitious jewelry website offers the 'The Golden Dove of Peace' which is actually an 18K Gold Dove Pendant with 18" Gold Chain.

    Most places

Title and H1: 'The Golden Dove of Peace' which no one searches for.
and then schema markup pushes the description off the results.

Make 18K Gold Dove Pendant with 18" Gold Chain the title.
Rename the product to Gold Dove Pendant
Kick the "artistic names" into the product description... make them as big as you like. Just keep them out of your SEO.

ALSO... do away with artistic color names. If it is Lime Green then call it Lime Green... don't call it Fiesta Lime because people don't search for Fiesta Lime.

    Cheers!

would you mind using airbnb or booking.com as an example, they don't have product names as the owners make up a name to describe it. Then how would they SEO such a single property page if the keyword for example is london holiday apartment and there are 100's of other london holiday apartments on the same site.

Title: Vacation Rental: 2 BR, 1 BA, Bungalow in Seattle : $85 per night - AirBnB
Meta Description: New cottage, cabin-like, in the heart of Seattle. Close to bus line, cruise ships, shops, restaurants, waterfront, parks, bike paths, stadiums, Space Needle. Our cottage offers a kitchen, w/d and queen bed among other amenities.

The "made up" flavor names like "A whimsical cottage in the city" are just content above the description... don't use them in your SEO.
