Authority Site SEO Case Study

Hey BTB if you don't mind me asking what Press Release service do you like? (PR Web etc)

Also I'm assuming you are just using brand URLs for the anchor?

Thanks in advance.

I used to be a fan of prlog but have, over the past year or so, migrated away from them as they seem to have lost their ooomph.

For pure PR services I don't think there is a better one than PR Web these days and do take advantage of their power.

In a PR I use branded KWs, yes, I think that looks most natural.

Here are a couple of KWs that are starting to show some life:

i know were still building content for the website, and this thread is about SEO, but when do you start building your social media presence to look like a social authority as well? in my niche, i think it's important to have so many followers on each network. when do you start building your social profile? and do you outsource that?

A social media authority case study would be an interesting one I believe and I'm not really the guy for that. I am fairly strong there but that is not what I am pushing with this site. I will be adding a social profile down the road a bit, after the site has some volume in content, but that is not something I see as natural right off the bat.

If I outsource that it would be with people that are on my staff as I am not a fan of the different services offered out there since I think that there is too much of a chance of many of the using the same G+ followers, FB fans, Twitter accounts etc.

I'm not looking to slam those services, I just think that is not the best way to build up your social presence as it could leave a footprint and mess up all your work.

Thanks for the reply! I just wanted to see if there was a correlation between building a huge authority site, and the amount of work needed afterwards for creating a strong social presence. Authority sites I've witnessed rank for a bunch of keywords, and have a strong social media presence.

I was just curious to see if building/owning an authority website took care of the work for a social media following once the links were made available on the website, if that makes sense? Excited to see how this plays out. Thanks again BTB.

Without a doubt, in today's SEO environment, you need a social presence. I'll have a FB and twitter page, G + page, do the reddit, pinetrest, tumbler, stumblupon thing and have plugins for people to auto-interact with us on them once the site is complete plus I'll have someone on my staff get me links, fans, followers and all that good stuff as well.

I'm a bit away from starting that process though as my first course of business is to make sure I have enough content on there to look like there is some meat on the table.

when u talk about social signal what I can think of is to buy them.. what tool is needed if I want to do it on my own?

I do not buy them as I have people on our staff that generates them. I fear a footprint of I were to buy them.

As to tools, I can't help you there but perhaps you could start a thread about tools for that sort of thing and see what people offer as ideas.

Interesting case study so far. I'm starting a similar project but not on as big a scale as you. I'm looking forward to seeing how yours works out. Good luck!

Yesterday was a bit of a lazy day as far as this project went; I set things up to get a few links to the soup.io and about.me pages I built. Ended up with just a little over 33K links to them as of about an hour ago and stopped the process as that is plenty.

I don't think I'll do anything but add another article to the site today as it is Sunday; if I get a little crazy I'll add a tier 2 to those 33K.

I assume, that those 33K links are spam like blog comments, etc. Are not such kind of links as tier 2 too risky?

Can you please suggest another Do Follow parasite hosts, where links are not subdomains and where content is posted without moderation approval? (similar to about.me)

The links were lower level links but I did not want anything too strong and I did not want anything that was going to get indexed overnight either but the platform I use is a bit cleaner than what is commercially available so it was not spam in the sense that most of us consider spam per se.

They will slowly get indexed as the site builds content and since I add a lot of content on a regular basis it will work out fine for the way I build a site.

There are a million Web 2.0s, Press Release sites, etc out there to use like I did with the about.me and the soup.io and you can use any one of them actually but unless you are adding a ton of content I would not recommend hitting them hard with links.

Also, {do|no} follow for that sort of thing really means very little as I am not really doing that for SEO as much as I am for branding. I know that may sound a bit off but I am sure that branding is in the algo to a certain extent and that is where some of the value is in a no follow link.

People miss that and want only do follow links all the time and that is a mistake in my opinion. In all my backlinking I want no follow and in the services I sell I insist that the brains behind the project (programmers) put no follow in the process as I know it works in ranking sites on a long term basis.

Ok, got it. (I know about web 2.0's but I think, that parasite.com/my page url format will be more effective for smapping.) My websites are EMD's so I dont care about branding, but if I succeed in IM and decide to create an authority site will care about it and your journey will be a great source of information. I am pretty sure, that you won't stop until u get decent results.

Thanks. :)

I totally agree with the statement about branding. I only started to develop my brand when my EMDs started to tank in G and since then, all of the sites ranking on the 1st page in my financial services niche are brands - not EMDs.

This totally went over my head. If you have some time, i'd appreciate it if you'd explain it .. in a simpler manner perhaps :) thanks mate.

Some questions for you.
1.You said that you schedule posts to your site. How many posts do you aim to do every day?
2.What about interlinking and linking to outside sites? Do you do it whenever you see it fit or do you try to find reasons to interlink?
3.Do you use subcategories or broader categories only?

If you are thinking that you want that site to be a long term revenue stream then you may want to consider some branding. It goes a long way in making your site stay a long time.

The process I use when I send massive links to anything is not the same as most people use. The average guy uses GSA, and it is an outstanding tool, but we have a different process we use that was coded by our coders for our sites that is not a commercial tool. So the links I send to my properties are a little more controlled and we do our best to make sure they are not indexed immediately.

They are spam links, no doubt about it but not what you would buy off the street.

braindebug asked

1.You said that you schedule posts to your site. How many posts do you aim to do every day?

I do not have a set amount every day nor would I ever do that again. I did do that back in 2009 and 2010 but that is on my footprint checklist and I no longer consider that as a good idea.

2.What about interlinking and linking to outside sites? Do you do it whenever you see it fit or do you try to find reasons to interlink?

I do not interlink to outside sites unless it is going to give me revenue and then I nofollow the link.

3.Do you use subcategories or broader categories only?

Typically I use broad categories but I have some sites that have subcategories; I personally find them a little cumbersome from a visitor point of view though.

Great read so far.

One question about link timing.

Do you think it matters when a backlink to a money site gets added? For example, should you add the backlink(s) to the money site only after the tier 2 site(s) are built up themselves? Or can it be done earlier?

I don't always do the tiered linking thing to the links to my sites but I think it is more natural if the link to your site is in place before you add a second tier to it.

Often with a site that has strong content and a good online presence a second tier and even no links are required to get it to show up in Googles' sweet spots.

Thank you for everything you have shared with us so far. I am currently working on an E-commerce website selling apparel to a certain niche. Do you still suggest building up links to the posts? I think I would have a better conversion rate by getting traffic to the home page.

Anyways, If you have any general tips at all for actual e-commerce websites with an actual brand identity, it would be greatly appreciated.
