Authority Site SEO Case Study

Looks awesome!

A few questions about keywords..

Will you be targeting specific keywords for each article?

Or are you targeting lots of keywords in general?

Will you be expecting to rank for one or 2 word keywords with high difficulty?

If so, will you be targeting these keywords specifically?

How do I get the images to rank in Google like that?

Simple work that takes just a few extra minutes and I share that here (read the part about images):

Here is a visual that may help:

I will give this a try to improve images, really useful as always mate.

So, you're building your authority site with expired domain but it's the same if you use fresh domain and 301 redirect it, right?
And hope you choose dropped domain from the same niche, right?

I never build sites on dropped domains because almost all times the domain name sucks and I want to give to users catchy domain name, easy to remember and fresh.
What do you think about?

Each article will target one particular KW but will have a splash of some of the other related KWs I am using in it as part of the natural process. I almost always add in one or two other ones in a natural non-KW density way.

I'm sure that I'll end up with some rather difficult KWs in the process and will rank them along with the easier ones. That will require more effort but is usually not that bad though as I get a fair amount of benefit from ranking some of the easier KWs.

The domain is a dropped domain and is close to the niche I am targeting. I checked the backlinks and the previous content on the site to make sure that I was not getting something that as spammed all to the moon and back and one that had no evidence of being hacked.

A generic domain would have been fine though.

And I did add in a plugin to redirect all the 404 pages as a matter of normal due diligence.

Wow man, everything seems too expensive, even if i were to do the 1.5k articles myself it would still take a LOT of money to get it done.

Guess I will try your strategy as soo as I reach $10k to spend on this.

Good luck!

Honestly, the best thing you could invest in is Dragon Dictate (or whatever the Mac version is called) I use it all the time and even with my regional English accent, it picks up pretty much everything. I used it today to write a 1600 word article and including 5 minutes to edit the bits it didn't pick up correctly, it took me just 15 minutes to get it dictated, edited and published on my site.
If you buy any software at all - buy this.

Agreed - Dragon is the bomb.

Thanks BTB for sharing your journey. I'm looking forward to learn from your journey. I'm planning to create an authority site too. Just a question if your don't mind. Are you using static or dynamic homepage?

I always use a static home page that has between 1400 and 2000 words. That article is a general article not focusing on any one keyword although there are some KWs peppered in the article itself.

I don't try and rank the home page, it is more of a gateway/intro to the actual site contents.

Why do people just write posts to say " thank you" when there is a thank you button. Try not to post unless you are asking a question so people do not have to scroll through dozens of "thank you" uselessness to find good posts.

Thank you.

If you aren't trying to rank the home page, do you still build links to the home page to keep the site looking natural? Or just focus on the inner pages?

I send a handful of links to the home page but I never try to rank the home page. I have a few "authority type" links there, some press releases, about.me perhaps, some links like that but the money is in the inner pages where topics are covered in some depth and thus I backlink those pages.

I put up a 1300 word article this AM, KW density is a little under 3%.

I won't backlink again for a while as the original stuff was more announcement than backlink. I'll probably add in about 80,000 words or so before I do any more backlinking and certainly before I monetize it.

BTB,

How about those of us who can't afford expensive back-linking tools or don't have our own customized ones. I am sure there are plenty others who are in the same boat as me and would like to find other Manual back linking or free workarounds around this.

Secondly, How about if the frontpage was something along with the lines of a magazine style theme frontpage- with a few of the selected articles posted on there (with glossy images), instead of the latest ones on top like in a blog. Does it make any diff in terms of Rankings etc or since we are not trying to rank the homepage it doesn't matter?

Thirdly, when you post articles, do you do it as a post or as a page? (assuming you are using wordpress). If so how does your permalinks setup look?

Thank you so much.
Great information so far :) you're awesome.

You can't get best links from software. They can only provide you same jcow , wiki , web2.0 , comment links.
The only way to get HQ links is to do it manual. Only tool you might need is scrapebox. I am getting best links for about 5-30 minutes per link and they work great.

That's awesome. I actually have a copy of Scrapebox lying around :D But i am curious about what do you mean by 5-30 mins per link. Any Tutorial or resource you can guide me to? To be honest i've only used Scrapebox for posting shitty worthless comments lol and haven't found many good tutorials. I appreciate your help.

I do not know about free ones but manual is absolutely fine, with an authority site, the content does most of the heavy lifting to get you going.

That sounds like a nice twist on the process... I'm not a huge fan of them personally but that is taste and not SEO... I would do that if it fits your mind's eye.

99% of the stuff I publish is done using the post in WP. I do have pages but they are few and far between.

I'm going to agree somewhat here; you need to know how to place links manually for best effect before automation. That is how I started linkpushing back in 2008/2009, manual posting in various backlinking structures. That seemed to have worked out pretty nicely.

Honestly it was not fun but it sure is effective and once you do that you can build on that knowledge and automate.

Look up Loopline on Youtube, he has EXCELLENT videos on Scrapebox.

Out of curiosity how to do you get images for the site? I have tried CC but mostly buy them - just wondering since there will be a ton of images which route you take.

I agree about the monetization bit - that you want to wait - it makes sense and you won't make much in the beginning. However, something that has not been talked about here is list building. I do think that you should start this immediately (if you haven't already). I think this is one of the most important aspects to any website. I've build lists in odd niches where you may not think to do so and it has always paid off for me.

The way I would personally do it would be like this: throw up opt-in forms from day 1. Even if you don't bribe them with anything other than "free updates." Then once you build up that list a little bit add a Facebook page. Nobody likes to come to a site and see that Facebook widget with a sad 3 likes. You can use your email list to get some instant likes, this will give you some social proof and it is also another contact point for your readers - just one more place they can see your site and hopefully come back to it.

Finally, the monetization part - this comes later on of course and by this time you will already have a list built as well. If something were to happen to the website you at the very least still have the list and can still bring traffic back to the website. Also, you can sell things to the list - you may even make more from that then the website itself.

For some websites I don't even think about them as the money making vessel but rather the list generating vessel. It is a platform that grows a list and the list is the money making vessel.

I have bee thinking about getting opt in forms myself, but honestly I have been lazy. Your post though, has totally motivated me to do so!

I have a similar strategy. Ranking churn & burn sites with opt in forms so even if the site tanks, I still have a list of potential customers that I can market to.

Good Stuff!

I have never collected emails from my sites like that as they are all larger informational kinds of sites and I'm not a real fan of doing the email thing on a regular basis but that could be an excellent way for anyone to monetize a site like these.

I'm simply a let them buy/click on an ad kind of guy when it comes to those sites. My SEO blog and services are a different story as I do collect emails and am building lists there and if I had half a brain I would do the same with my authority sites.

For images I usually use the free ones via google images but I do spend some money with the guys that sell them online... all the usual suspects.

Here is the process I use in Google for those that are unfamiliar:
