Any practical database resources and tools?

I am student in computer science and honestly I hate most of the classes that I have taken so far in my major except the two IT electives that I have taken which are an entry level database class and a data warehousing class. Both classes were interesting but even though they were junior and senior level classes they felt kinda basic. The database class was pretty much an intro to queries and triggers etc. and the data warehouse class was a lot of business oriented topics as well as the project for the creation of a "data warehouse". The main thing was the use of ETL tools like pentaho and then understanding the data with a software called tableu. The DW project was pretty cool but i feel way to simplified to be a realistic project that a company would request.

With that being said I am unable/unwilling to get an internship with a company through the school due to my current job which ultimately pays WAY better then the school can and offers professional experience in the IM world.

I still plan on getting my degree as I am almost finished and would try for a DBA type position if the opportunity presented its self.

TLDR: Are there any real world database project//problems that I could encounter if I were working a day to day job as a DBA. Or any other resources for that matter.
