There are loads of alternatives.
SERanking, Ahrefs, Moz, All in one Seo, Wincher, Screaming frog, Ryte, Silktide. Just to name a few.
All have there pros and cons. But it will likely come down to what your husband wants to spend and which he finds easiest to use for the money he’s willing to spend.

If you are looking for software similar to SEMrush I recommend looking at tools like Ahrefs and Moz. Maybe also try SimillarWEb - it too has free features. They offer a number of features for keyword analysis, ranking tracking, and competitor tracking.
Semrush is one of the best tools that I have used for my projects. I don't understand your statement.

Spy your competitor's backlink profiles and then try to get the links from that source.
