It's best to learn all the coins carefully, know its platform and understand it before investing, because there are many junk coins that you can be scammed and lose money, take a few courses or learn on google and Youtobe before investing, good luck to you)

Wether you’re going short- or longterm depends on which cryptocurrencies you’re looking to invest in, anything top 10 in terms of MC can be considered for long term (BTC, ETH, BNB, SOL) - anything lower should probably be held based on cycle momentum (altseason).
Personally if you’re not looking to spend a huge amount of time on staying up to date on everything around crypto news, i’d advice just doing a steady DCA into BTC and keep a long term vision.
