The way I see it, I only want article links, and web 2.0 links at the first level linking to my money site, and spammy comments, profile links, and bookmarks at level 2....ensuring that my level 1 links have plenty of backlinks, juice, and a good indexing rate.
This theory is working well for me...I guess the quality of content you submit also helps....quality spun articles
As I think I've mentioned above, and sbw27 said above, the key is using AMR for 1st tier links, as they're content links and I can get links embedded into relevant content inside the article, as well as in the bio.
The 2nd/3rd tier strategy is a mish-mash of any and all spammy links that I can get to drive up the link juice for the article pages, and aid in 1) their crawling and, 2) their indexing.
I use a number of bespoke tools and systems, plus some public ones. Our own services backlinkbanzai.com and ubertoolz.com form the core; and we use several X-Rumer based large-scale systems like Dripable, DFB, BlastBank etc for building hundreds of thousands (and sometimes millions) of 2-3rd tier links - which are normally comments or forum profiles.
You need to understand that Article directories just don't have a wide enough IP spread for really generating large number so links. I mean there are what; a few thousand working article directories max at any one time. I'm lucky to get over 1,000 properly successful submissions each time out of AMR - and I really know how to use it. Sure, there are lists everywhere which say they have 25k AMR sites. Just try using them. You may get 3-5k accepting your signup - but the vast majorty will just be WP with no article acceptance. Getting over 750/800 succesful subs every time requires effort and a lot of work on adding/controlling the site-list.
But when you look at the stats on forums and blogs... There are estimated over 30 million working blogs at any one time, and over a hundred thousand forums. That's a lot of web-estate... And no-follow links will still help crawling and indexing and they still add to your rankings.
Use the 120k Dripable package at $97 per month and use Nuclear Link Crawler at $12 per month to force them all to be crawled. That'll give you 120k monthly links to point 20 at 6000 different AMR URLS each month (200 AMR URLs per day: I do 100 AMR URL's x 2 submissions.) That means 60 articles submitted per month (with around 200 indexed each time) or 12,000 content links per month, with 120,000 2nd tier.
And that's just one block. We run multiple blocks.
Generating effective links on this scale is not for the feint-of heart!
