AMA: Client SEO -

great thread ..... i have learnt so much. Congratulations. Most guys here dont share, they feel like if they share information its a "Sin". I appreciate guys who share, look at how Tommy and others share and grow big. Keep it up dude.

On the flip side i love seeing the Jnr VIPs & the Premium Members Desperate for info LOL....

Wow. Thanks a lot for the tip on what to do. If would recommend one to do analysis for competition backlinks, profile, serp tracking, keyword analysis and site audits all in one app which would you use. Don't want to spend so much current with the few clients we have right now. Was looking at SEO powersuite but still on the fence whether to buy it or not. Used the free edition and seems to be quite decent but want to hear from long time users.

I'm not sure all of that can be done in 1 app. Maybe Moz pro but I'm not super familiar with their service. When I first started off I didn't spend a cent. GA and GSC were all I used. You can share Ahref and Majestic accounts with other SEOs and split the cost 50/50 or 33/33/33.

MSM allows 10 free keywords to be tracked so just use 1 email per client to start.

Screaming Frog is free and you have access to most of the important stuff with the free version.

These guys also have some good apps. http://www.seoreviewtools.com/seo-tools/

Since you consider yourself "Grey hat". When you're building links for a clients money site, would you build blackhat links directly to the money site or would you create a web2.0 / new domain in the same niche and point your blackhat links to those?

Clarification:
Client Site <- PBN <- PBN
or
Client Site <- Web2.0 / Buffer Site <- PBN <- PBN

I'm wonder since someone reached out to me and I'm seeing what's the best way. I would pick for the first way for my own sites, but this client wants to see the links first and I don't want to to show them my PBN network. I would rather keep that safe and avoid them doing anything to my domains in there.

Depends. A quality PBN can be tier 1 links. If you spam then spam a tier 1 link. Most of the work I do is white hat and the black hat stuff just helps give the white hat efforts the kick it needs. I always take caution with how much blackhat I use as there are quality business websites I'm working with.

MS <- Tier 1 (PBN)

MS <- Tier 1 (whatever) <- Tier 2 (spam)/ web 2.0's/parasites.

Always wondered what approach do people like you take while servicing clients. Clients always like to see results, definite results. When they ask you to promise them something, whether it's traffic or rankings, how do you tackle that?

That's one of the hardest aspects of client SEO is that clients often have unrealistic expectations and if you tell them the reality - some might look elsewhere.

An uneducated client see's me saying for $1,000/month you should see results after 6 months and fake SEO saying $50/month and you'll be page 1 in a month. There's a reason why most of my clients have hired (and fired) 2-3 SEOs before me.

To answer your question, I generally tell them that there are no guarantees with SEO and there are dozens of articles that back that (if chatting I'll link to a few). I also tell them that I have a 99% success rate for meeting the clients (realistic) expectations. There're a couple of things I show them:
  • Do a Google search for a keyword and copy the number of results.
Their website is competition with (likely) millions of other websites. You have to prove to Google that there's is better than all of those websites (give or take 9 AKA page 1 results). You're also competing against the SEO or SEO company that those websites may employ. You're doing a hell of a job when you beat out 10,000,000 websites and dozens of other SEOs but there are other people trying to rank for those keywords and most clients just need to understand that you're literally battling other SEOs for rankings.

do you only do client SEO or anything on your own too?

Yes, some of my clients are people who have affiliate SEO sites and need consulting. I also have a list of MS ideas to try out and create threads about but my time is limited right now. Right now I handle:
  • Client SEO
  • SEO consulting
  • Email marketing
  • Marketing strategies
  • Web development

First of all, this is a great thread OP. I expected BS and you reverted my expectations, thanks for doing this.

Yeah, that is exactly what the terrorism put out by search engines is supposed to achieve. Matt Cutts has said explicitly that people who do SEO are like criminals who subvert the legal system for profit. He actually went there. Gaming his search engine results is like a criminal gaming the system. That propaganda is efficient.

Social media and the Internet have in fact indoctrinated a whole generation to be passive, accept everything and obey. SEO customers are no different.

Tell a bunch of idiots to go hunting Pokemons and just the other day I was getting into my car at 7 PM when I saw a bunch of idiots walking around filming everything with their stupid phones and I asked WTF was going on, they said it was Pokemon Go. Idiots become voluntary surveillance cameras just to capture inexistent beings.

With a generation like that what do you expect? Tell them you bought a link and they freak out because they must obey a corporation. That's the world we live in.

From my understanding of the SEO world - Matt has a point. I don't think Larry Page thought that people would create careers out of ranking things on Google. What we're doing is manipulating their algorithms in order to put our websites / our client's websites ahead of the websites that Google thought should be there. In doing so, we're also lowering their profit. The point of a corporation is to generate the highest amount of profit as it can and we're shitting on their annual revenue because people spend on SEO what they could be putting towards PPC.

I can pretty much rank anything locally and that hurts Google. Some CPC for Adwords within the law and real estate biz is $100 and that money goes to me instead of Google. Not saying I'm anything special but I think most people who study and try hard enough can do what I do.

I think millennials (which I am one) have been Google's fucking nightmare. We were born into the internet, I've been online since I was 5 (mostly just computer games back then, but still). We know how to exploit the internet and turn the tide in our favor. Many of use resort to passive income methods which lead to SEO. I bet if you survey all the fast food workers in the US, a good portion of them are trying to make passive income online to supplement their shitty pay which leads to learning about SEO, which leads to more info, which leads to new tactics that are difficult for Google to shut down. That's mostly opinionated and not as well thought out as it sounded in my head but I think you get the point. Google changes based on our needs. We flock to social media, it becomes a decently-heavy ranking factor. New ranking factor that matters, new exploits. Google then adjusts to shut some of them down but...I think we'll win in the end.

Once clients work with me and gain trust they believe what I say once I prove that Google has no problem with lying and a lot of "Guru's" don't either. Consumer education within the SEO world is something I direly want to improve but it's difficult when I say "Everyone buys links" and Google says "Buy links and we'll murder your family" and there's even Guru's who say "Link building is dead, don't build links".

how can they guarantee web traffic?
http://www.DoroTraffic.Com

I saw this site the other day, don't remember how I found it. Probably on here. Just because it says "real human traffic" doesn't mean it is. I'm not saying it's not but if they use bots that come from the US (assuming the buyer is in the US) and those bots go through links, stay on the site for x time, and maybe even put an item into the cart - will most people know it's fake traffic?

Under what the service entails, it says FB ads which could be how they drive the traffic. I'm not too familiar with FB ads but if you assume no profit that's $0.02 per user (20/1000). It may be a mix of bots and $10 spent on FB or something. Can't really say too many specifics.

I'll admit, there are certain things that I specifically won't share just because once it gets out to the masses - I could see a huge drop. If I have a client acquisition strategy that can earn me an extra $2,000/month, easily, and I tell the world, competition could make that drop significantly. Somethings you just have to figure out yourself. There's enough information on the internet that if you can piece together parts from various sources you'll see great success.

I don't see anything wrong with paying members thirsty for knowledge. We're not all experts at everything.

SEO did not begin with Google, in fact Google was a late arrival to the game. My "career" defeating search engines began way before Google, so Larry Page did know people already had careers in SEO.

Beating their algorithms is what competition is about. It's not dishonest to try and beat their algo. If by the same reasoning, then Apple is a criminal because their phones take profit away from Google.... Google's profit is their problem, not mine. If my invention lowers their profit without breaking the law, it is honest. It's called competition and it's what keeps capitalism working, it's what keeps them improving their system.

But Matt Cutts made SEO's look like criminals, simply because they beat their algorithm. Which is where he lost a lot of sympathy within the SEO community.

I apologize for my ignorance.

But like any corporation, their job is to maximize profit. If it was legal for Google or Apple to blow up another's manufacturing plant without a PR problem, I'm not sure they'd take the high road. The more we take away from Google, the more they try and take away from us. They'd love to eliminate some competition. Adwords now shows ranges unless you're a big PPC spending, lowering the map pack to 3, adding paid results in the map pack, adding a 4th PPC result in organic search, etc. I'm not saying competition is bad but no company likes to have a lot of it. It ruins their bottom line.

Do we help them improve? Yes. But we still also lose them a shit ton of money.

You make great points all around this post. No need to "apologize" at all, we're just bouncing ideas here back and forth.

We didn't make them "lose" any money. Google is not a charity, they are a voracious corporation that'll take your eyes, legs and arms if they can to profit more.

But their propaganda is very efficient as you can see.

How are you paid?
I mean to make sure you don't finish the job and the client fails to pay?

Amazing AMA with really insightful information, here is my question.

I am a client who runs a local business, the competition for my keyword is low and many of my competitors links that are up on Google page 1 have very little backlinks. I select you to do my SEO.
What steps do you take after this? and what do you provide in monthly report?

Alot of great questions and info in here, I am bookmarking this so i can keep up with it.

Wow, sorry it took so long to reply so some of these. Never got an email about new replies :(

How are you paid?
I mean to make sure you don't finish the job and the client fails to pay?

Method or amount?

I use Zoho to send invoices. Payment options on these are PayPal or Stripe for CC.

I get paid either monthly or twice a month (occasionally weekly, but most don't opt for that). First payment is always 1 month upfront. Let's say Sep 1st i get paid for the month of work. On Oct 1st I'll send an invoice that's due by Oct15, I'll continue work up to 1 week after the invoices due date.

If it's a low competition keyword, then it might not take a whole lot to rank in terms of backlinks. Keep in mind that there are a lot of factors aside from backlinks such as:
  • Onsite SEO
  • Content
  • Social signals
  • Mobile friendliness
  • CTR
  • UX
  • etc
There are also ways to hide your backlinks from crawlers which is a common practice with PBNs.

I would compare your standings to your competitors. Backlinks profile, AT profile, metrics such as DA, PA, TF, and CF, etc. From there I could probably get a proficient understanding as to why they rank higher than you.

Monthly reports include ranking reports, and may include audits if that's what was done at that point. It all depends on the client. Some clients don't want a lot in their reports, some clients want to know my every keystroke.

Alot of great questions and info in here, I am bookmarking this so i can keep up with it.

What is the best way you suggest for finding new clients?

I already spoke about client acquisition in this reply.

"Outsource it - Some companies specialize in doing outreach for you or you can hire someone to do it (solo - not a company). I've never done this before but I did sign upfor a free test with a BHW providerto see how they do."
Can you link me to the thread or PM me his username? I would love this!

Update on that: I contacted them via BHW & their website about a day or two before I posted that reply. It's been a while and they never got back to me via either method. However, there are companies that do outreach, you just have to Google it.

Great AMA. Can you discuss what your ideal page contains regarding content (500 words, vids, embeds)

Also what are your thoughts on the latest updates?

It really depends on the type of page. Homepage, service page, product page, contact page, etc.

For most pages, I like at least 1,000 words. Content pages 1,500-3,000 words. Always 1 piece of rich media whether it be a pic or a video.

The latest update has been really interesting. Sep 2nd was one the flux started. I saw on BHW reports of the UK getting hit but saying that the US wasn't affected. I know that the law vertical in the US was affected from all of the ranking alerts I got that day. Compared to the average number or reports and velocity.

I do think the US got hit but I do not think it was hit with the same velocity as the UK based on what I've heard from their rankings. However, it would be interesting to know what tactics were used on all those UK sites.

For what the Sep 2nd update affected is also really interesting as I've heard a lot of different reports. At first, we all thought it was Penguin 4.0. John Muller declined the fact (we can't always trust Google). I heard reports that it was indeed Penguin, that only local search was effected, that organic search wasn't effected, that all rankings recovered, and that not all rankings had recovered.

Is it Penguin 4.0? No. But that doesn't mean it's not Penguin 3.X. With Penguin 4.0 we would see a lot more movement. I also can't say for sure that it is or isn't Penguin at all. I'm currently gathering data across the US law vertical to compare who got hit the worst with their backlinks and anchor text profiles.

Yesterday (9/14), my Twitter started blowing up about another update/test. Most of the people I followed said they noticed that queries that previously had images within the SERP (making it 9 rankings on page 1) were no longer there (making it 10 rankings on page 1). I checked Mozcast and average results on page 1 did see a large increase. Additionally, I saw a lot of law websites that I track take huge drops (20+).

Can't seem to find one lol
If u don't mind PMing me one please

I Google this one http://www.infogroupmediasolutions.com/what-are-your-needs/customer-acquisition no affiliation and I don't know if they're any good.

Thanks for your reply,
Can you share some challenges you face when ranking for your clients?

What is are a few good ways to kick off a phone call with a client?
Do you do any performance contracts and how?

Thank you so much for this wonderful information. It looks very good "Quuu" !! I did not know him.

Thanks for your reply,
Can you share some challenges you face when ranking for your clients?

Ranking in high competitive niches/locations

Ranking a client with a very low budget

Ranking a client that has a crap site but doesn't want a new one

Ranking a client that has a new website

What is are a few good ways to kick off a phone call with a client?
Do you do any performance contracts and how?

Most communication with my clients is done via Skype message or email. I limit the amount of voice calls or video chats as they often interfere with my other obligations.

That being said, I prepare before every call. I review the most recent report, email threads, work I've completed, work in progress, and my game plan for the future. Make sure they have no questions left unanswered.

I can't stand performance contracts, they usually mean there's a lack in trust.

Thank you so much for this wonderful information. It looks very good "Quuu" !! I did not know him.

One of the most inspirational posts I've read on BHW ever! Thank you for providing this pure gold @SEOMemj

I have an amazon affiliate site with around 15 buying guides, each of them targeting different low competition buyer keyword. What is the best approach in terms of link building, but aside from PBNs. Would you go for Guest posts, or something else?
Do you think I will be accepted for a guest post taking into account that all of my posts are buying guides with no informational posts on the site?

I found 200 blogs and left around 200 comments on them till now. My next task is to found related forums and posts links there, then email outreach or perhaps going for guest posts.Do you think this approach is good and why not :)

Just one last question. Is it better the most links to go to the homepage or to the inner pages that are best ranked for the particular keyword?

Sorry for my long post.

Thanks in advance!

Happy that you found it of use.

I can give as best an answer as I can, I do client SEO and not affiliate stuff (right now, at least) and I do believe there are a lot of different spectrums within SEO and all of which can (and 'need') to be approached differently. (local, national, international, e-commerce, corporate, affiliate, etc, etc).

If I were to be working on an affiliate site, I would play it less safe as I'm only able to hurt myself. But when it comes to low competition, and I mean actual low competition - you can rank in a matter of days. When the competition is low you can dominate based mostly on content and easy-to-build links.

Get 1,000-1,500 words on the page (optimize the page, obviously), embed a YT video on the page (Animaker or Moovly work) that YT video should also link to the site, bonus points if you use the KW you're targeting as the title of the video to rank that video on page 1 as well. That, assuming your onsite and technical is fine, is usually enough to be within the top 30. From there it's trial and error.

A quality PBN or guest post is expensive so you'll need to calculate what you'd be spending compared to potential earnings for that keyword.

What will be accepted for a guest post depends on the site but products can get links to.

I wouldn't waste time on blog commenting. Not saying it's not worth it but I would outsource it and not have the majority of my links come from blogs comments, looks spammy. If you're looking to do blog commenting and forum posting on scale, trying looking into some software. GSA, SENuke, Money Robot, etc. These tools are generally for the tier 2 level.

Distribute your links. A real website doesn't have links only going to its homepage. You also don't always want your homepage ranking in the SERP. If someone is looking to buy your product, you want that product page to be what they click on. Not the homepage, then another page, and then the product.

Cheers
