so, I heard that you need some links on your page pointing externally to other people pages to tell search engines what your article is about.

So if its car racing. U need to point to cars so search engines get an idea of what the content relates to.

My question is how many External links should I put? Like what 3 links per 500 words?

Also, should they be follow or nofollow?

This CAN boost your rankings BUT you have to link to HIGH AUTHORITY sites to get a boost.

This boost began with Google's HILLTOP algorithm update

Pro tip: Link out to NON-competing but topic-relevant pages. Wikipedia is a good option.

Awesome, thanks for the Hilltop info.

as for follow or no follow. Im going to go with follow. Since nofollow means you want google to ignore the link.

You can use one link on 500 words content. However, try to write a contents at least 800 words.

Ah, I thought you were trolling me. 1 link is enough? please tell me you have tried this and experimented with different numbers of links per the same word counts in content on a website. Yes?

One link is enough. If you run website on self hosted wordpress, try to install Yoast SEO plugin if you want check your page is over optimized.
Sure, sometimes I also put many links on some post but all external links usually is source to lead a reader to buy an item.
All my web page that ranked on SE only have 1 external links.

Adding external links will prove helpful but overdoing it will also greatly affect your site. These external links are the mainly here for the readers. They provide better info on the topic making it easy for others to understand more easily. So make use of such links only when they are necessary. For 500 words 1 or 2 external links is enough!
