Yes I know, I was asking if google maps results can be beaten with a site and good seo. What do you think?

IMHO, you should try to rank with the Google place listing. Much easier and faster this way.

Uhm, considering that google places results always show first when you search a keyword followed by a city name, it should be preferable. Any hint for ranking on google places?

1) Optimize the listing (include the exact kw in the title + fill out everything in the form).

2) Once active and the modifications updated on the maps, backlink to the google place url just like you'd backlink to a website.

3) Rank

He needs Local SEO, a lot easier to accomplish and will provide him with the results he's looking for.

This is definitely one of those situations where you should be looking at building up then local SEO side of things in the interim, and working the main site in the long-term. Local SEO is going to be faster here though, as others have mentioned already.

Take a look around at some of the stickied and popular threads here... there are some great guides to local rankings.

You would tie in Google Plus with Google Maps..... And use a very direct approach -
Hairdress (Keyword) + Location ..... An example of this would be to google - Responsive Web Design Delray Beach - you would see a map listing on the third organic ranking - in addition a Web 2.0 Property of ours is 7th... Of course you may see different things but its there... For you I would say build out Citations ...
