Hi if I want to rank for "online calculator" with my website myowncalculator.com
if I purchase the domain onlinecalculator.com and make 301 permanent redirect to myowncalculator.com
will it help in terms of seo?

Does it still work? Some people say Google has become extremely strict about redirecting expired domains and one should build a website on the expired domain first, wait around 6 months to get back its SEO power (and test out the domain) and only then redirect it.

Yes do not worry about redirecting domain from keyword domain if you doing it correctly major search engines treat this rightly.
It is a good idea to redirect domain to a new domain as Google also do the same.
