Anyone else seeing a sudden Google organic traffic drop since yesterday (Oct 18)?

My site was steady Yesterday it dropped (roughly -40%), and today is looking even weaker so far.

I'm trying to figure out if this is something on my end or a wider Google thing (an unannounced update, ranking volatility, etc.).

If you're seeing the same thing since yesterday, please share what niche you're in and roughly how much you dropped. Any insight would be really appreciated, thanks!

Seeing fluctuations too? Could be a Google update, worth keeping an eye on it for a few days.

How much did your traffic drop, roughly what percentage? And when exactly did you first notice it?

Google’s dashboard currently shows no reported incidents. Are impressions and rankings down too, or just clicks? Compare complete days with matching weekdays before assuming it’s an update.

Thanks for the tip. The drop I’m seeing is in my site’s own analytics dashboard, not Search Console yet. I’ll check GSC to see if impressions and rankings dropped too, and compare with last Sunday. Will update here.

My blog hasn’t experienced any issues, so perhaps the problem is with your blog rather than a general issue affecting everyone.

Thank you for rply but i have tube not blog

I’ve been waiting a week for someone here to bring this up, because the SERPs have been shifting for about seven days now. Since we’re around the time we’d expect a core update, and we usually see some movement before the official announcement, I’d say you’re probably seeing the effects of a core update.

My site was already dropped last 3 month due to google updates, and many time increase the traffic.

Honestly a sudden 40% drop can just be a few top pages slipping or a Discover swing, so Id check Web Search and Discover seperately in gsc first , especially since todays numbers are still preliminary. If your impressions and positions held steady while clicks tanked , a serp change like AI Overviews is probably hurting your ctr. If impressions dropped across multiple pages at once , check your crawl stats and recent site edits, cause a clear status dashboard only rules out official rollouts and not unannounced volatility

I'm sure you're not alone. Google is dropping updates every month and there are several ranking volatilities per month reported by users and trackers. So, we can't pin point a ranking drop to an update like earlier. Google has become an unreliable traffic source and the bloggers are constantly moving to reliable platforms like social media.

40% is a large drop, particularly when it comes to sites that were steady prior to this.i would see if the competition has been moving up for ur keywords nd compare that to how things look in the search enggine compared to last week.the ranking can fluctuate without changes in ur content. what niche are u working with nd are all ur rankings declining?

Yea it’s been hard to get traffic with google for years, try social media traffic

I used to think a 40% drop had to mean a penalty. nasina's check on whether competitors moved up flipped that for me, since a rival gaining ground looks like my site falling.

For a tube site, checking the Video Indexing report in Search Console might help. Also make sure Google can still access the video pages and thumbnails. If those are fine, compare which pages actually lost traffic before assuming it's a Google update.
