I have been seen websites improve their keyword positions without getting much organic traffic. What could be the main reason for this? Is it related to search intent, keyword selection, CTR or something else? I would like to hear how others have handled this issue.

This usually happens when the keywords have low search volume or rank for a different search intent. I would check Google Search Console for impressions, CTR and clicks, then focus on keywords with real traffic potential and make sure the title and content match what users are searching for.

Probs cuz you're a cat, SEO ain't for cats. Go climb a tree and swallow a bird whole or sum'n.

Haha without more data it's impossible to pinpoint the exact issue that you're facing. All the relevant factors that you've mentioned above affect the results of a specific website in SERPs, however the exact strategy that you're following depends on the exact actualization i.e. execution as compared to theoretically assessing the performance of a given case study.

Often I see the phrase Be better than the others proclaimed on this forum. What does that even imply when Google's search and continuous updates have lost relevancy in the age of AI? Beat the competition, yes. Optimize for (potential) customers, not just Search Engines, and you'll get a leg up. However from experience and what I've gathered throughout the years, I've come to the conclusion that SEO comes down to a variety of factors, whether it's creative purposeful content that appeals emotionally and engages a user throughout the experience, as much as the technical side of a website and how the contents retain structure when crawled by an intelligent algorithm for ranking. Google displays favoritism as well, and none singular strategy is guaranteed through core updates. What works today can become a burden tomorrow, even though some competitors might have better results to show-off.

Late edit: Backlinks are still the most important ranking factor, whether commonly accepted by Gurus or otherwise. Authority won't get built overnight without receiving acknowledgment.

Check whether the ranking gainss are for keywords with enough serach volume and the right intent. Also compare CTR in Google Search Console, as low clicks desspite good positions may indicate your titiles need improvement.

even with keyword positioning you still have to be sure what people are searching for, sometimes ranking improves but the keywords have low search volume

As many people have said, you have to make sure you have this search volume for the keywords you're ranking for. One keyword with 100k search volume in position one will give you more traffic than 5,000 keywords with literally nonexistent search volume

Ranking improvements do not convert to traffic if the target keywords lack real search demand or if your meta titles fail to earn clicks in search console.

sometimes we target keywords with very low search volume. even if rankings improve, the total number of visitors can still be small.

there was also a case where I ranked up but had no traffic because the keyword do not even have any search volume.
make sure your keyword is receiving any impressions and click-through rate on google search console before making any changes to your site.

check which keywords are actually moving up and how many searches they get.page gain positions for terms that barely bring visitors.also compare impressions and ctr in search console because if impressions are rising but clicks stay flat the title or search intent might be the issue.

check your CTR and meta titles because a better title can help to get more clicks from the same rankings.

This typically occurs for two primary reasons at present. Either your keywords are rising from page 5 to page 2, where clicks are negligible, or you are ranking on page 1 for informational queries, where AI Overviews and SERP features push the organic links well down the screen.

Searcher's might already be getting their queries answered by the AI overview. As a result, nobody gets a visit.

i would also check what new positions the keywords are moving towards, in addition to looking at whether or not there was an improvement.moving from page 5 to page 3 sounds like an improvement but it still might not mean that it is getting any traffic.there are some keywords that simply do not get searrched often enough for it to make any difference.

Usually, it's correlated with search volume for the query
You can check GSC to see which ones have more traction

I'd look at the keyword mix and the SERP before jumping to the conclusion. A page can go up in the rankings and still not be bringing any traffic if it's essentially targeting very low volume long tail keywords or queries that simply don't have the click through potential.

I’d look at:
Are the keywords actually being searched?
Does the page match what the user is looking for?
Are impressions going up but clicks remaining flat?
Are AI Overviews, snippets or ads taking up the clicks?

use Google Search Console to compare impressions, clicks, CTR and average position by query. Better rankings are a good thing, but the keyword opportunity and the SERP layout are what ultimately determine how much of that translates into traffic.

I think is depend on the keywords you rank for and maybe the ranking is for some specific area that have less impact for sales and conversions...... Please try to check what area you rank for ..... my idea is the keywrods you rank for somehow have no value really or are not relevant for what you try to sell/make convert

can be a combination of things. Sometimes the kw moving up have low search volume or they’re ranking for searches that don’t bring much traffic in the first place.

been there lol, usually it's low volume keywords or ai overviews eating the clicks. rankings look nice but the clicks just aren't there tbh
