I'm working on a WordPress website and trying to improve the technical SEO side of things.

How much attention should I give to core web vitals, page speed, crawlability, and things like image optimization and unnecessary pluging?

For those who have worked on WordPress sites, which technical SEO issues made the biggest difference for you?

I optimize all the website’s technical aspects at a basic level. The most important factors are still content and backlinks. A website’s technical aspects are supportive, but they are not the deciding factors for its overall performance.

its also important, but I don't think technical SEO is a separate part of SEO as its is based on some pillars and if you don't focus on a specific pillar, you won't succeed.
If the site can be crawled, pages are indexable, the important URLs are canonical, the site isn't full of broken links or duplicate junk, and it's reasonably fast on mobile, then I would rather spend the time on the actual content and internal linking.

I have seen WordPress sites with plenty of technical checks passing but still getting very little traffic simply because the content wasn't strong enough or they didn't have enough backlinks.
So technical SEO is more about removing site problems than expecting it to rank the site by itself.

tech SEO is just the starting point for overcoming the errors. remove the redundant plugin nd concentrate on search intent nd linking.

I usually just run a site audit once a month and fix all the technical issues as much as possible...

The only ones I mostly just ignore are related to JS and CSS minification issues.

I'm not saying you should ignore those as well, but for me they aren't critical warnings and my site itself is already fast enough.

If I push it too much more, I would probably just break the site.

The most important ones I usually don't want to leave unfixed are those that might affect indexing in any way or issues where, if I don't fix them and make the right setting once and for all, they will just keep compounding.

For example, a site audit I did for my site recently found an issue with multiple H1s showing on the same page.

The issue was that the other H1s were coming from the titles of the related article section under the post, which is part of the template I'm using.

If I don't notice something like that and fix it once and for all, it will just keep compounding with every new post I publish.

But I already corrected it on the affected posts and also changed the template title HTML to H3, so there isn't an issue any longer.

That's just an example of why it's important to get technical SEO issues fixed and occasionally run a site audit to discover issues before they become too big, which would take much more time to fix.

Focus on Core Web Vitals, fast loading, clean plugins, optimized images, and easy crawlability these usually make the biggest technical SEO difference.

Technical audits are very important, especially when a website has a lot of functionality. WordPress keeps updating itself by releasing new versions frequently, so we need to be very cautious about that.

Sometimes, plugins can get stuck or fail during updates. You must pay attention to plugin performance after updating WordPress.

Always important to keep your site optimized for search
If I had to pick one metric, load speed

Prioritize crawlability/indexing, mobile performance, image optimization, and removing unnecessary plugins, if, on wordpress.
In Technical SEO for WP, fixing obvious technical problems matters more than trying to get every Core Web Vitals metric perfect.

I’d focus on crawlability and indexation first, then move to speed and Core Web Vitals. On WordPress, large images, unnecessary plugins, heavy scripts, and duplicate URLs can quietly create technical issues. I also like checking which pages are actually affected instead of trying to fix every warning in a speed tool. Once the important pages are clean and easy for Google to crawl, then optimizing CWV and page speed makes more sense.

Yeah, I agree. I'm also trying to keep the plugin setup lean and put more focus on search intent and internal linking. thanks for the input.

That makes sense. I'm thinking the some way get the technical basics right, then focus more on quality content and backlinks. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies and insights. I really appreciate you sharing your experience. I've got a much better idea of where to content and linking.

Don’t try to fix everything at once. Start with crawling, indexing, mobile speed, and page speed. For WordPress, optimizing images and removing unnecessary plugins are good places to start.

WP plugin bloat and crawl waste hurt more than going after optimal CWV scores i looks at logs or GSC first before speed

For WordPress, we prioritize indexing crawl, site architecture, broken links, Core Web Vitals, mobile performance, image optimization, and removing unnecessary scripts.
Fixing issues that actually affect crawling or user experience usually makes a big difference than chasing a perfect Page Speed score.

Faster loading is definitely a must; since if it loads too slow your audience/traffic is going to bounce. That also means that the less plugins you have the faster your website or blog will load.

for me plugin bloat was the biggest hit, had like 30 plugins on an old site and load time was awful. cut it to under 10 and mobile speed score jumped a ton, way bigger diff than chasing perfect CWV numbers
