While I was working on a few website. I noticed that improving internal links between related pages seemed to have a bigger impact than I expected. Some pages started getting indexed faster and a few keywords even improved without building any new backlinks. I know backlinks are still important, but it made me wonder whether internal linking is being overlooked by many sites owners. Has anyone else experienced something, or is it a coincidence in my case?

I do not think it's a coincidence. Good internal linking helps search engines discover and understand your content better, especially on large sites. Backlinks are still important, but many site owners probably underestimate how much impact a strong internal linking structure can have.

Nah, internal links are a massive win because they push juice from your big pages into the ones that are stuck, it gets the bots to crawl your new content way faster so you're not just sitting there waiting for an index, keep your silos tight and use real anchor text to see your rankings jump.

Yeah, that can happen more often than people think. A solid internal linking structure can really help search engines understand your site better and push stronger pages faster, especially if the site is already a bit established.

My strategy is actually using Semust ai internal linker tool that we are scanning whole website and when we share new article we are scanning with the tool old articles that able to give links new one, that really pushing new articles on rankings.

Definitely not a coincidence. Internal linking is one of the most overlooked SEO wins—better crawlability, faster indexing, and clearer topical relevance can move rankings even without new backlinks.

Internal linking is the game changer, it can make better improvements in ranking if follow the white hat seo practices & if implemented correctly. Mostly seos ignore this strategy, but it give solid results even in tough niches.

Yes, It is one of the most underrated tactics On the large sites, this helps in improving discoverability and understanding your content better.

You are spot on Internal linking is arguably the most underrated lever in SEO right now It forces crawlers to prioritize your best content and passes authority where you actually want it Definitely not a coincidence. :)

They are really important to pass juices to other pages.

not a coincidence at all. internal linking is one of the most underrated seo wins, especially on smaller sites. it helps google discover pages, understand relationships between topics, and pass authority around the site. i've seen pages move up without any new backlinks just from improving internal links and site structure.
a lot of site owners obsess over backlinks while ignoring what they already control.

Once something is normalised, people won't find it important to discuss it and focus on difficult things instead. Getting external backlinks is extremely difficult, so almost everyone focus on it and discuss methods to build new links. It doesn't mean that internal links are underrated or ignored. We have guides, plugins, and several threads at our disposal. If we still ignore them, it's just laziness.

They are underrated because the work looks simple, but the impact depends on structure. Adding random links is not the same as connecting related pages around a clear hub. I have seen pages improve after cleaning orphaned content and using descriptive anchors, and, well, it also makes the site easier for visitors to explore. I would audit links whenever a content cluster grows rather then waiting for a major cleanup.

I didn't know that internal linking wasn't that spread o_O It helps crawlers find more pages and maybe indexes them

I’ve seen similar things happen before. Internal links are an under-rated technique, since they help distribute authority, improve your crawling efficiency, and provide context to your topics.
It’s not going to make up for poor backlinking practices, but on well-established domains, improved internal linking can yield benefits from existing content.

You are absolutely right; internal links are indeed a seriously underestimated tool in current SEO tactics. They can proactively guide search engine crawlers to focus the crawling budget on your highest-quality content, while smoothly directing page authority to the key areas you truly value, and this is by no means accidental.
