Start drawing, redesign other logos. Look at what people have done. Read up on it. Look at designs you like and make adjustments to them. Build up a portfolio and join a website like fiver.com or something.

For me I like to sketch in photoshop, then finish it in AI.

I have always been drawn to red black and orange. Although I think purples and black and geys work well.
