You're likely not going to become the number one erotica writer with your book anyway. Erotica is more quantity over quality to be totally honest with you and it's not easy just because I said that either. If you get in to this game, be prepared to lose some money before you learn.

Can't give you an accurate number but if you really achieve #1 you don't have to worry about your investment. ;) I had one Top 100 book (overall ranking) in Germany two years ago and made 8-9k/month with my 7.99 paperback and ~3k/month with my 2.99 eBook. The US marketplace is much bigger so I would say 1k/day is the minimum.

But kekmaw is right ...it's more a numbers game. You can lose your investment with your first books (even if your quality is good) and the 5th book pays off all of your past investments. That's the reason why most Fiction authors start with short stories (low risk) and build up a fan base (email list, facebook etc.) before they publish their first big/time consuming/expensive novel. Because then the possibility is much higher to have success and get your investment back. It's all about branding and you are not able to stomp out a brand from nowhere. I won't say that this can't happen but the possibility is extremely low (=your investment is very risky). Success is a process and not an event. There's no shortcut to become the #1.

The road to becoming number #1 in any niche is a long one. In the Erotica niche, you are going to need a plethora of short stories to pull this off. If you want to get your investment back in a month or two, I don't think Erotica is the right genre for you to do this in unless you already have a fanbase of some sort. Or you know of a secret place where the Erotica buyers hang out. LOL!!!

If you do discover where that place is, let us know.

Also check out https://www.reddit.com/r/eroticauthors/ and look at the dataporn posts. You will get a lot information this way. They share what has worked for them and what didn't work. Also what they did versus what they should have done differently. Plus how they are planning on moving forward from this point on. Good luck.

If keeping your costs low are very important to you, then probably writing the books and making the covers yourself might be your best bet.
 
The OP is talking about outsourcing the work, where would be the best place to do this? Where can you get the most bang for your bucks?

Ha ha I will tell you that place . Sometimes it requires a certain wired brain to do that.
ITs really a mass of info you need to remember to get a novel done properly as I tried with a few

May I suggest a little trilogy called Fifty Shades of Grey?
 
IT varies for each vendor

Some charge 6 cents per word
Some 13 cents per word

I hired someone to do 8300 words for fifty dollars each story module per week to complete the whole story over a monthly period

How many pages is that? Did you like the work and did you earn some money off of it?
 
Is it a good idea to have the first little book, and it is little, to start off to be in Kindle Unlimited to get em hooked so to speak?

I mean would they actually buy the next books?

I have never read Fifty Shades Of Grey. But the people who have told me about it claim the same thing. It is not Erotica and never should have been listed in that category. I really can't say yes or no on that.

Also it had a fanbase right out the gate. Notice what I said in my previous post. “If you want to get your investment back in a month or two, I don't think Erotica is the right genre for you to do this in unless you already have a fanbase of some sort.” I think that is one of the best lessons you can lean from those books. If you can build a massive following who will click the buy button as soon as your book is published, then you stand a great chance of being #1 very quickly.

You can't pick ONE success story and ignore tens of thousands of "failed" authors every year.

- 600,000 to 1,000,000 books released in total every year in the U.S.
- On average, those sell fewer than 250 copies each
- Only 1.8 percent of self-pubbers made over $100,000 a year

Success is plannable. You can invest in a great cover designer, talented writer, analyze the market properly for trends and keywords, build up a fanbase etc. There's no reason why you should not becoming successful. You can increase the possibility BUT you can't force to become a bestelling author, popstar, supermodel or whatever because for that, other things are decisive on which you have no influence. It's like trying to force to become a lotto billionaire. You can increase the possibility to win by playing every day but your "success" is not based on your performance. It's based on luck. A business/success isn't based on luck. It's a follow up of right decisions.

I don't want to say that such success stories aren't happen or that it's not possible for you to become a bestelling author overnight ...but the chances are extremely low. Focus on the things that are working and maybe it happens or not. Don't care about it because you can't give more than your best. Good luck
