Having grown a large network of over 15m+ likes in under 13 months, through trial and error I've learnt a lot in what makes a viral page tick. For those in this section that have an interest viral pages, it is important to note that it's more than just having viral content on your page. To absolutely maximise everything has to be on brand from the very beginning. In this thread I will give a tutorial on what I like to call "The Building Blocks" - which are the foundation of starting a viral page that could potentially be generating millions of views with a bit of work.
1. Niche/Audience
This is by far the most important place to start. If you don’t know what kind of content your page is going to post or who the people you want to reach are - then you are less likely in building a page with a strong community that interacts with your content on a frequent basis.
Find a niche you are interested in (no point finding something that doesn’t move you, there won’t be much passion in it and you won’t put your all into it)
Once you’ve located a niche, decide who the audience for this niche is going to be. Create a “profile” of your typical fan. Such as below.
EXAMPLE
Niche: Female Content Gender: Girls
Ages: 14-25
Locations: US/UK/CA/EU
Type of Content
• Relatable Pictures • Quotes
• Cute Animal Videos • Funny Teen Videos
2. Page Name
Don’t underestimate the power of a page name. To be a viral page, you want to absolutely maximise from all angles to build fans that develop into regular viewers of your content.
How do I come up with my page names?
Most of my pages are catered to teenagers aged between 14-19 as they are most responsive to
content I enjoy sharing - so I always keep the names short. No more than 2 words although there are
exceptions to the rule such as this page (this is not my page but just an example that long name can also convert if done right) .
You could try to find trending words of the year or something really obvious so that without someone needing to go on your page to find out what your content is all about - they already get an idea from the name. Try not to be too generic such as “Funny Videos” that’s too overdone. Something memorable and in your face.
Don’t forget that while the most common way people are introduced to new pages on Facebook is through content that has been engaged with on news feeds or the ticker feed, there is still a lot of traffic that comes from the search bar. So ensure the name is likely to be words that people will search for. So this requires a little bit of SEO knowledge.
Whatever you decide your name to be, make sure it has an interesting story behind it that could one day entice your audience should your page ever become a potential to be a big brand (if this is what you're aiming for). Always think of the bigger picture.
For example, and for those who do not know. The page above is owned by Alex Patridge who started a page called Unilad in 2010 and he sold it when it was a few thousand likes. Now as we know, Unilad has grown to be the biggest video publisher in the world. Hence the name of his page.
3. About Section
Fill in every necessary section of your About Me and ensure everything is correctly spelt to optimise the keywords you use. This is where a little SEO can come in if you know what you are doing. Generally, it takes Google a few weeks to update SEO on About tabs from Pages. And if you’re smart about it, you could be getting some free referral traffic to your page - it may not be a lot of people but it’s still something - the numbers add up at the end of the day.
I’m no SEO expert so I won’t go too much into this as I don’t want to give information I that may not be 100% accurate.
OPTIMISING YOUR PAGE WITH SEO
A trick you can try that I’ve found to work is to find a random keyword related to your page and go to Google. Type in “x keyword + vocabulary” and head to one of the top searches. Pick the best words from the vocabulary list and string them up into sentences that make sense to sum up what your page is about. I’ve found this to be a quite effective in bringing traffic from Google for some of my pages. All these building blocks add up and play different roles which help to
I no longer need to do this anymore as my pages are now viral on their own so referral traffic from Google is not a big issue unless it's a popular keyword.
PAGE USERNAME
Equally as important as the page name. Try to make sure the username is exactly the same as the page name if it is available. I understand that so many usernames are already taken and at times the pages have been deleted however Facebook hasn’t made the username available to anyone yet. So in these instances, make the username as similar as possible to your page name.
PAGE PROFILE PICTURE
Going back to what I was saying about a username that converts, this is equally as important. Make sure the picture you use is something that not only people can understand but also tie to your page name and content. Sometimes you may choose to brand with graphics rather a picture but in the beginning, I recommend a picture of something that is generalisable.
COVER PHOTO
Before clicking on your page, the only other way for someone to see your cover photo is by hovering their mouse over your page name (this only works for desktops) - so again, make it something eye catching and related to your content. Also stick to a colour scheme so everything stays on-brand - you want everything to look “together” and not a page that’s been made with half-hearted unrecogninsable designs or pictures.
These are the basic building blocks you should be doing for every page you begin. For any other questions related to viral pages please post below and I will answer as best as I can.
Hope this tutorial helped
