OP, thanks for all the regular updates. Its part of my daily routine to check this thread. I have heard some things from friends that own individual accounts with 5 mil + followers and they are getting nervous for the next IG algo update. I would advise monetizing asap.
Thanks Snook. This will really change the IG landscape when it hits. Any idea when? I was hoping to monetize by end of June when I'll have a huge block of free time (I'm traveling right now for work and other commitments, writing this post from a cafe in Europe).
Some initial thoughts:
1. After The Changes, It's Still Worth It
I have some friends who are making 20K profit a month from their micro-niche facebook group with 200K fans. Thats pretty good considering the FB 4% throttle. If people can thrive with FB's throttle, I hope its equally true for IG throttle.
2. Optimize Your Business
This will kill certain types of businesses. The Shout-out business will be worth 96% less. If someone pays $100 to shout on 1Million Account, that will be worth $4 to shoutout to 40,000 people.
3. Increase Quality - Gain Subscribers
This will require increasing the quality of accounts in order to get subscribed. Most of my posts are 2nd-hand, 4 Stars (out of 5). I may consider hiring graphic designers to make a load of 5-star posts. I was considering doing this anyways once I hire someone from upwork for $5/hr.
4. Convert Blackhat to Whitehat. Own your network.
Email is still king. Once you have someone's email, no one can take that away. FB/IG/Youtube/Pinterest/Linkedin could take away your entire business overnight. But if you have the emails of 500K users - whitehat marketing is your friend, sending daily or weekly email blasts, blog posts, promotions, etc. I plan on converting as much blackhat into whitehat as quickly as possible.
Also, create an unstoppable interwoven social web. Send them to your Pinterest, Tumblr, Facebook, Blogger, Medium, Youtube pages. If the follower is not part of the 4% audience for that IG post, at least increase their chances of seeing it on another social network.
5. Competition will Change
Pro: Thousands of people taking advantage of how easy it is to make a buck will quit.
Con: New players with lots of advertising money will grow quickly.
Conclusion: We are in the middle and will both benefit and get bypassed by this arrangement.
