Tomorrow, June 2nd, 2014, will be remembered as the day that the internet evolved and every generation of internet users were unified. My vision for an affordable, truly generic, and open namespace that I had years ago will finally come to fruition.
Since the beginning of the internet, there has always been a need for a generic domain extension that has never been fulfilled. Let?s look at some of the most popular domain extensions: .com, .net, and .org. .com is meant for commercial enterprises, .net is meant for networks, and .org is for organizations.
Where is the extension that has no connotation or meaning that can be used by anyone, anywhere, for any purpose?
Four years ago, I had a dream of creating the .xyz domain extension. Although the letters ?XYZ? have little-to-no meaning, everyone in the world has used and seen ?XYZ? at some point in their lives. So what is .xyz? .xyz is whatever you want it to be. It?s a totally customizable domain extension for Every Website, Everywhere.? It?s the platform for people all over the world to develop a memorable and meaningful online presence, regardless of their industry or interests.

Now keep thinking.
Now try and forget it. I dare you. Just like I dared 10 million people who listened to me on NPR. And guess what? You can?t forget it. It is the ending of the alphabet, and it is the ending of domain names. It?s instinctive. It?s natural. It makes sense.

A brief history
Let?s go back to the year 1985. What happened that year? For starters I was born: Daniel M Negari (DMN). What else happened? The first .com was registered. And it took until 1994 for .com domain names to actually be used for commercial purposes. Then it took another five years and several million registrations for it to popularize in 1999. Fast forward to 2014 and there are approximately three million domains registered every month.
Over 250 million domain names are now registered in the world and 113 million of them end in .com. With 5 billion new internet users coming online in the next decade, plus the significant advancements in mobile technology, this number is continuing to grow at a RAPID pace. The revolution is coming ? and there is a need for a short, affordable, and universal ending to domain names that allow individuals to express themselves online.
Why didn?t I choose another extension?
So why not .web or .online? Aren?t those obvious generic domain strings that everyone will want to register? Maybe 20 years ago. But in 2014 ? or 2024 ? why would someone get on the web to visit petstore.web? Why would someone go online and then type in email.online? Isn?t that a bit redundant? We are not in the 80?s or 90?s anymore. Both of these terms are outdated and stale ? and neither extension is even available yet! There is only one true generic domain extension that exists on the internet right now, and that is .xyz.

After speaking with some of the top registrars, I have learned their users are very frustrated with the domain registration process.
