Thats a good point, they are cheap now.. in fact, risking on harming the general perceived domain value, however lets not forget that .com's were also at 0.99 for months..
It is a registrar decision based on their marketing strategies I guess.. Godaddy is selling .xyz's at 6,99 usd each as of today!
In the other hand most domain companies running the 0.99 offer I guess plan to recover their investment on renewals..
NOTE Also that of all the extensions, .coms have been abused more than any other extension available so abusers will abuse, Any domain extension that happened to ecist suffered that think of -->> .mobi, .net .info and now .xyz and also .co, etc.
What makes a domain extension valuable is the amount of real registrations that will end turning into a real or a decent website and I have not seen much .xyz turning into sites yet apart from Googles abc.xyz so only time will tell but the extension is certainly moving forward and apparently is one of the few that is catching investors and new generation web users attention so far..

And how many extensions are there? there is dozens if not hundreds....So now its not even about getting the best domain because dozens will have the same domain with different extensions. Who cares if you land something like porn.xyz when there is a 100 other guys with the same domain but different extension. By the time someone tries to visit your xyz site they will end up on your competitors site who own a .com or .net....

Because if, indeed, we were newbies and all we have left in the world is to watch porn or waste time with get rich quick schemes, then why would you even bother replying to us?
There is an ignore option. You can ignore us. Instead every time you answer us you get more and more emotional and defensive. Calling us names, insulting us and telling us "if you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all" are clear signs that you're being immature, and that is behavior of someone who clearly has a stick up their ass. When not one of us have done anything but simply reason on the fact that you're here trying to make money "D." All of the signs are there.
Again, why the hell do we need to discuss .xyz? If you're not trying to make money off of it, why are you pushing it off on other people?

What are you trying to discuss, you don't want to accept the fact that since xyz is now $1 a domain its going to be used by nefarious websites on a budget. People aren't buying 10+ at a time to create long term white hat brands for the domain they are buying. People are still going to be buying .com/.org/.co.uk for their long term projects for years to come.
For example Blackhatworld.com seems like a legit site if they switch to Blackhatworld.xyz alot of new people would start associating BHW with low quality and scams.

This is a big change... people don't like changes, or even new things... like the moment bitcoin was released and many people were thinking it was a joke, a worthless one... Gotta trust Google on this one, I will keep an eye on .XYZ domain stats before I think about investing on them.

What change? There have been lots of domain tld's created in the past few years, Google buying one doesn't make all of them valuable. Everyone that is buying it for white hat purposes is buying 1 at a time, everyone that is buying it for churn and burn blackhat sites or "spammy" sites is being 10+ at a time some close to 100 at a time. the TLD .co was once considered a good alterinative to .com but then everyone started buying it for blackhat projects such as warez sites and its not considered a good tld if your branding a site.
I'm almost sure Google will end up giving a boost in rankings to XYZ domains to support their own investment, pushing in the next domains for 'next-generation websites' if you will, we have seen them changing ranking factors to force website owners do stuff for them (mobile friendly site, SSL) and I'm pretty sure their next step for jumping into new-gen is buying those domains.
And spammy websites shouldn't even be mentioned, don't you think they would have considered it? Those who are buying hundreds and thousands of XYZ domains for spam are just supporting the project, and the ones with trustful sites following Google's guideline will see the true potential of it.

What I will tell ya for sure like a person who was and is in the Online / Offline marketing for years now. This domain or any .nonsense domain will never ever become favorite to people.. Why ? Its FCKING SIMPLE ... Even your grand grand grand mother will remember a myfckingdoctor.com but go ask her to remember the myfckingdoctor.xyz .. xyz? Even the crappy myfckingdoctor.tk is more easy to be remembered .why xyz? why not xuz? or xoz .. or sos? I don't think that we need to discuss anything here. Because never xyz will become the next .com .. the next .info maybe but not even closer to .net.

It doesn't matter what google does, if people think something might be a scam it will turn them off. Hardly anyone trusts .info due to all the bad websites using .info since it used to be so cheap.
Well... considering your grand grand grand mother hasn't ever used internet before, and she doesn't know anything about internet domains, I THINK it would be easier for her to remember herfuckngdoctor.xyz ... because ... she will notice its the last 3 words of alphabet, who would forget that?
About that new domain competing against all other domains, I admit I don't have enough knowledge to tell you for sure what will happen with it, I can only tell that from the logical point of view and realizing how things are changing and are not the same as 10 years ago. But who knows! Just trying to figure out what's going on with them and why they are making such a move...
You have a good point there, that will be one of the things that will be holding it back before it even gets closer to .COM's popularity

Nothing is changing, its just people are spending money to purchase tld extensions so that they can make money from people that are too lazy to come up with a better name or they think they need it for seo.

No. My opinion is just as valid as anyone else's here. I have a right to disagree and point out flaws just like everyone else in this thread. I'm going to continue to participate in this discussion. You don't have to like it. Hit the ignore option if I bother you so much. Otherwise grow up, and realize everyone here isn't going to agree with you.
Like I said before: there is nothing special about .xyz. Popularity and hype do not make it a good investment. And since so many people are using it for churn and burn sites - and admitting to it on this thread - it's going to be associated with scams in far less time than you think.
