Using Jetpack sharing buttons ruins your onpage/KW optimization.

I don't post here much, but I thought I'd share this little tidbit I found today. I was auditing the onpage of a site I just started a few weeks ago when I noticed that ALL of the pages had a bunch of words injected into them that had nothing to do with the topic! The terms were things like "click to share" and "opens in a new window". These terms weren't visible in the text of the pages, but they showed up with every word density tool I used. Since every automated tool was reading them and seeing them as content, It makes sense that google does too.



After a little investigating, it turns out that the "sharing buttons" part of the Jetpack plugin was the culprit. After I turned off the sharing buttons all of the extra keywords were no longer detected, and everything looked normal again. After looking at the before and after pic, it's clear that the plugin was injecting 63 words per post! Also realize that this plugin puts those same buttons on every post on the entire site. You can image how that would be detrimental to your site as far as duplicate content, and watering down your keywords!


You might be asking yourself "How did it take him a few weeks to see this?". Well, I outsource 90% of my content. When I receive a post, it's in Word format. I run it through all of my checks and tweak the word counts, readability, and KW/LSI percentages all in Word before I post it. Until now, I've never looked at the posts on the sites after they've been posted!

If you want to check your page, I used the SEOquake plugin for firefox, but there are tons of other ways to check.

Never liked jetpack share buttons,i always use digg digg.

Me too, jetpack just doesn't look good. Anyway, anyone who might be facing this switch from Jetpack to another social sharing plugin like Addthis, digg digg etc.

I'm using social media feather now. I can't really say if it's good or not, I've only been using it for a couple hours. I do like that it has shortcodes so that I can use the html "<center>" tag on it in the sidebar. About a year ago I used sharaholic on a project. I didn't really care for that one. It seemed to make a simple task a lot more complicated than it should be.

I'll take a look at addthis and digg digg too.

Well, now I have proof that G thinks these added plugin words are content. I just checked the "content keywords" on WMT for the site and "new" "share" "opens" and "window" are all towards the top of what G thinks that site is about. Thanks Jetpack! On the good side, some of the pages must have been reindexed already because they're ranking higher already!

I've never used it before this site. I'm using a theme that I got here from the J.R. VIP and it "required" jetpack to work properly. I'm pretty sure the only thing it really needed jetpack for is so it could call itself a "responsive" theme, when really it's just an older theme with the jetpack mobile plugins.

Either way, I am also not a fan of Jetpack. Especially now.

I finally got a chance to try out Monarch today. I added the follow widget to the sidebar and everything was fine. I then added the sidebar and media sharing and it all went to shit.

I had something like 30 instances of the word "facebook", 30 "twitter", and so on. I went back to using the shortcode for social media feather as far as sharing goes. I think that's the key. I think if monarch could be called with a shortcode, it wouldn't inject all of those words into the page. If you're just using the follow part of the Monarch plugin you should be fine, but if you're using the sharing part of it in any locations, you might want to check your onpage word distribution. My guess is that you'll have dozens of unwanted social words repeating.
