Question about blog content and SEO

Hey all,

Let's say I was trying to rank a website for a local business. Does this website need content to rank for a specific keyword?

So if the website is about martial arts, is just having content on the homepage enough? Do I need to have a regularly updated blog, even if some of the blog content doesn't have the keyword in it?

Edit: In case the above isn't clear - does the mere presence of a regularly updated blog on a website help with SEO?

How else do you think search engine will find out what keywords you're trying to rank for?

Sorry, I got kind of confused.
If having content just on the homepage is enough, is pretty hard to answer without knowing the details. What keywords, search volumes etc. A one-page site is kind of poor, imo.
I'd to something like having 5 pages, all the important stuff, accessible from a navigation menu. Then also a blog section (previews at homepage maybe?) where you can add content as time go, to build more value over time.

Fresh content always helps when it comes to SEO and not every single article needs
your main keywords all of the time. For local you are definitely going to want to get
social, make a presence with Google Maps, and focus on citations.

If applicable a page with freshly updated post would not hurt.

Fresh content isn't necessary, but it's a good thing to do. I usually upload an article or two once a day and then eventually once a week when I get really lazy >.>

And no, you don't have to use your main keyword in EVERY article, I usually rotate between my main article, a few secondary ones, and sometimes I just throw in articles that are just related to my topic without having any specific keywords in it.
