Nice tut for noobs. openlinkprofiler is good but mostly it's not much accurate. it will be better to check competitors with ahrefs before putting your eggs in. (or backlinkwatch.com)

Yes, wordstream is pretty nice tool. I use it along with GKT. Thanks to this guide I have found 3 more keywords for my site.

- After brainstorming a whole bunch of KWs, I go to Amazon, search for a book on the niche and take a look inside the contents page. It will usually give me a whole lot of keywords that i might've missed. Same with the index page at the back. Do this for about 4-5 books and you have a whole lot of KWs.

- Then I'd go to a instructional website (Lynda, Udemy, Dummies) and go through the syllabus of a related course in the niche. Of course this won't work for some niches but will work for a whole lot of others.

- Watch a few authority YouTube videos on the niche and listen for any niche specific KWs. Lot of important phrases & words can be picked up this way.

Your post on the other thread reminded me to come back here and comment. Anyway, this seems like a good guide for members who have a difficult time finding niches and keywords! I especially like the part where you mentioned finding long tail keywords using Google's search (it's a simple trick that I'm sure many new members are unfamiliar with).

I think it's a good idea to have a resource for people to gain base knowledge. A lot of newcomers
fumble around a bit before they get the system.

I have a question. Suppose a long tail keyword has Amazon and Ebay as the top results, but they aren't targeting the keyword. How hard would the competition be?

You can outrank those listings, but you have to remember that domain/page authority really matters
when you start sizing up with marketplaces like that. For example I was starting a niche website on
a current event and when I looked into the competition just about every site on the first page was top
news sites.

At that moment I looked for different search terms because the money I would have made from that
site was not worth trying to bump off NBC news. Heck eBay/Amazon is nothing compared to that
experience. Focus on some other long tails they get the job done and include those in your article while
you wait and work on beating these platforms for that keyword.

Where were you when I am starting out in IM? LOL! Very detailed tutorial, hope this will be a sticky and every noobs should be directed to this thread.

What do you think about keywords that have good metrics but only have e-commerce sites in the SERPS as competition? Because I've been noticing a strong trend in G showing more and more e-commerce sites in the serps. Also, those damn amazon and ebay pages seem like they are placeholders although they often have 0 links or PA

The hard part for ecommerce sites is most of them have bad on-site SEO with little content. It really depends on
what ecommerce site you are going after. Beat them with content and syndication. Hopefully you have a domain
that sizes up against them.

I don't mind at all if you add some addition's. More info in one spot the better! And those were some
