Hostwinds is the best for everything. Amazing company. Seriously love those guys down there. Whatever you do, do not go with arvixe hosting. Avoid that company at all costs.

For forum, shared hosting may not be a good idea.

Yes it is. Your forum won't have 50,000 members right away. I have had image hosts with over 10,000+ images and over 200,000 views per month on shared hosting.
For a small forum starting out it's fine, you'll have to upgrade as it grows like everything else.
Anyone telling you to buy a Dedi or VPS for it is dead wrong. You don't need any of that for a small forum. There is no reason to invest all of your money on hosting right away. What if the forum doesn't take off?
It's better to purchase shared hosting first, and use any money you have for SEO/advertising/ or even contests in the forum to get users to join.
(For example first user to refer 20 active members to the forum gets $10 paypal.)
If it gets to big, upgrade.
(I've run several image hosts with shared hosting as well as forums.)

so for hosting..i will need to learn linux ?
If the hosting company is worth anything you will have a Cpanel just like with any other hosting and
you should not have to do anything with it unless something is wrong and in that case your hosting company
should step in and do something about it.
Small start up forums get hit hard with spam so you are going to spend a lot of time deleting that
and then maybe install cloudflare or something to kill off bots or redundancy.

I recommend using a VPS. Several companies offer good service.
Personally I prefer Digital Ocean. Currently I am running a forum there with phpBB software. No problems.
The VPS plans start at $5/mo. and right now "2014SSD" will get you a $10 credit to start out with.

The downside is that you have to have a minimum of technical experience to install your forum software. If you can't do that, look for something else (e.g., something with cpanel or a forum pre-installed for you). Or pay some guy a couple bucks to set it up.

IPAGE IS a part of hostgator group i think.
I am using arvixe and hostgator and never faced any issue with them.
Start a forum with some small shared or dedicated forum and once you reach a stage where you started to receive large traffic move to vps.

If you use vps for me the best is bulletproofvps- Turbo vps plans. The Vps is with nothing installed on it and the support is always there for me.
