I have been doing SEO for the past 3 years now and haven't seen a site getting banned from Adsense for building links from directories. So I can certainly vouch that it is perfectly a white hat method.

I guess, you are new to directory submissions, bro,
All directories don't send an email when they receive a submission. Reason being that all directory owners have there own way of working.
Some directories will require you to confirm your email address to accept your submission -- this way the directory owner now has your email address in his database and can send you regular updates and offerings.(read email marketing)

Some directories only send emails when the listing has been approved and not when it has been received. Depending upon the time frame for approval, this will email will arrive.

Some directories will send you an email both when a listing is received and approved

Some directories will not send an email at all as they are owned and operated by newbies.

I hope, my reply clarifies the situation.
