With so many SEO Gurus advising you about different SEO & link building techniques, you might wonder what's actually working today. Article directories? Social Media? Web 2.0? I am listing the five top SEO link building techniques that work today in order of their importance for SERPS, hope that can help a newbie in this field.

1. Social Media - Facebook & Twitter are two most important social media websites, which can do wonders for your website. With some solid facebook and twitter following, you can easily bring your blog posts on top. Other sites like Rediff, Pinterest & Stumbleupon play an equally important role. Google considers it as an important signal that people love your website.

Point to remember: Facebook likes must not be doubted with links coming from a single site (so they won't be useful). Actually when readers share your article, they give you outbound links from their respective profile urls, hence more the social media participation, better the SEO.

2. Guest Posting - It's safest and most reliable source of link building. If you guest post on a relevant, quality blog, your rankings will improve. Better the Authority of the blog (where you guest post), more the boost in your own rankings.

3. Web 2.0 Properties - The sites like Wordpress, Blogger, Tumbler etc are great to start your link building campaign with. If you want to get your blog noticed in SERPs asap, you should go for it. Anyways, they work nicely for SEO, as long as you keep getting them over a period of time. Try to write an original article everytime (write 2-3 articles to improve the authority of the link), and share in on your social networks to strengthen the power of the link juice.

4. Blog Commenting - Participating in blog commenting can boost your SERPS. However, you can't just leave 250 same comments on 250 different blogs. It will certainly take you down. You need to take the discussion further, and be genuine. Vary the anchor text and try to get 10-15 comment links in a week, not more than that.

5. Forum Participation - Finally, in the list of in-trend link building techniques, forum participation is the 5th one. All the above rules of relevancy and original content apply here as well.

Some more Golden Rules to Consider While you Build Links...

A. Varied Anchor Text - It is important to keep your link profile natural. So try getting 10-20% exact match anchor texts, 30% unrelated anchors (like click here, visit this site), and rest naked urls. Links should be made to both homepage and internal pages (40:60 ratio is preferable according to many SEOs, however there is no fixed rule).

B. Get Links over a period of Time - Instead of getting 500 links in a week, try getting 5-10 links everyday, and your rankings will improve organically over time, and will become solid after sometime.

C. Quality Content - If you are in this field for sometime, you already know that scrapped or duplicate content no longer works, but it takes down your website rankings like anything. So write epic content!

If I have missed any important link building technique, rule or trend, please do mention it in the comments below. Hope that helps the people who look for latest link building tactics in the field of SEO.

PS, the domain age matters in SEO (almost 20% of total weightage). So, try and get old domains if possible. And Avoid link exchange (even if it's a guest post exchange). Google hates it!!

wow you know the ranking factors in google and how much affect they have on the rankings? where did you get the 20% from? do you work on the google ranking algorithm or something?

other than that good post, I am sure it might help out a few newbies

I was working on few techniques but not at all and my keywords are performing well in search engine. Now i will focus on social media and guest blogging and i hope it will also help me to get the desired results.

It's all based on analysis & experience. Other than that, it is important to go through google's latest blogs & updates. No intent of boasting, but it's kinda deep, because everything is driven from experience. Thanks.

Yes Aedan! Social Media will take care of your SERPs, just make sure you do it the right way (no fake likes or followers I mean), thanks

Glad to hear social media mentioned as a backlinking tool. You have to remember that most Fortune 500 companies have a social media presence so if Google punishes that, they screw Samsung, Toyota, Adidas, Coca-Cola and everyone else.

True, Social media has been working since past one year actually, and will continue to grow in importance.

Thank you for this awesome post, can you recommend when should one start link building?

I have recently started a blog on Designing and have around 4 posts on it custom domain and hosted on blogger. Domain is pretty old but the blog is 1 month old. Should I start writing guest posts and commenting? or should I wait and write more articles first?

I did a wrong thing then, I bought some "real" followers on twitter, and also something for Pinterest, but this method didn't work. It turned out that the followers where fake. So bad buck. Will try to use your techniques.

I already started building Web 2.0 link with unique content and everything (images, videos) and I just have to wait to see the outcome.

C. Quality Content - If you are in this field for sometime, you already know that scrapped or duplicate content no longer works, but it takes down your website rankings like anything. So write epic content!

Sorry but this defiantly not true, i have sites with mixed and 100% scraped content and they are ranking just fine for years now, please stop the "write great content" nonsense, the only thing you need to write "great content" for is your visitors not the search engines.

The whole dup/scrape content myth is really a myth, don't get me wrong if you have shitty content your visitors will leave your site but in order to get rankings the only thing you need to rank are backlinks and lots of them... don't belief me? Go test it yourself you wiouldbe supriced :)

Besides this great post for n00bs +Rep

OP, I admire you...

What about "outreach" being one of the most effective link building tactics that still works? Reaching out to other websites related to your niche and trying to get links on their sites that add value to the viewers.

I have a few friends that build new sites with only great unique content, and they didn't do any SEO. And they get lots of visitors each day, only from the unique content.

SEO seems to be getting easier and easier because the things that work best these days just require a lot of legwork. Picking up the phone sometimes gets the best links that aren't available to anyone else.

Should start with link building and blog posting together. Links will get you the rankings and enough (+nice) content will see your visitors coming again to your site, hence building your reputation.

Boriss, yes that's true. Great content automatically gets links, and unique content is always Google's first priority when they rank the websites. Relevancy (built through great content) and Authority (built through backlinks) is the key, in short.
